“S-l-o-w service, disappointed”
Reviewed March 8, 2014 via mobile

We booked a week ahead for a table of 6. We wanted 8pm, but got 8:15. Thats fine. An hour or so before our time, two more friends wanted to come along, but restaurant said there was no space. That's fine, I suppose.

We arrived on time, thirsty and hungry. We sat and waited. And waited. Finally we flagged down a waitress and asked for water. We had been there 25 minutes, and our orders had not been taken.

When we finally ordered we told the waiter we were on a time frame and needed to be leaving by 9:45 or so. He grumbled that he couldn't guarantee that would happen. We were astounded at the attitude.

We ordered only mains, due to the delay. It was after 9:30 when our food came. Two of us ordered the barley risotto. I said it was like savoury breakfast porridge -- he agreed. But others liked what they had, especially the venison in chocolate sauce.

One of us had a speaking commitment at 10 so we asked them to order a cab for us. Credit there -- the friendly lady ordered a big one to fit us all in.

I read the outstanding reviews here and wondered if we were all at the same restaurant? Maybe they were short staffed. The wait staff worked their socks off, but it took so long to get any result that the stress just made it an unpleasant dinner.

I wouldn't do it unless you have absolutely all night.

The final thing. A table for two beside ours remained empty the whole time. It would have been simple to pull it over to add to the three already set, so our friends could have joined us. How odd. Disappointing.

“Good Foor but too long winded”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

My husband treated me for my birthday whilst visiting York as he had seen a good review by The Daily Telegraph. Very unpretentious from the outside but very friendly inside. It was a Friday night 7.30pm booking. We arrived at 7.20 and straight away they noticed my husband had a walking stick and arranged a table downstairs for us. We chose starters and mains with a bottle of wine. Water and coffee are complimentary, how nice. After about 1/4 hour we were given some nibbles then 1/2 hour later an amuse bouche. The starters arrived at 8.30 and the mains at around 9.15pm by which time quite honestly we were no longer hungry. Quality was excellent but much too long to wait.

“Fabulous ”
Reviewed March 2, 2014 via mobile

We had dinner here with our two kids (9 and 12) while visiting York for the weekend. We chose Melton's based on the TripAdvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. As American expats in England we are always looking for a great meal beyond the obvious and easy-to-find gastro pubs, Indian, and Thai restaurants. To add to the challenge we have kid palates to account for and one fish-eating vegetarian. The menu was unusual without being unappealing and every single dish was delicious. We ordered broadly and shared bites all around. Everything was equally good. Our 9 yo now loves venison, and mushrooms. We hope to come back on another visit.

“Slow slow service no atmosphere”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

I visited here with my mother for a late xmas present.Firstly I had booked my table for 12pm and upon arrival the door was locked I waited and had to eventually ring them up to open the door, the guy apologised .The place was quite cold .we were the only diners at this time.we ordered scallops for starters and trio of pork for the main. It took an hour for our starter to come which considering they only had to cook 6 scallops is pretty damn slow,we was served an amazing tasting amuse bushe though and the scallops were great.Another couple turned up just as our main course arrived at 1.30pm and he turned the heating on above the door near us at last.the belly pork was nice but the terrine was vile and so was the other pork roll ugh.my mother cant eat gluten or potatoes so the waiter had said he would give her veg instead but when paying I noticed he had charged for it.we had our complimentary coffee and paid the bill it was now 2.30pm 2 and a half hours later.however we did notice that the other couple had a 3 course meal and had finished already obviosly they got served loads quicker than we did.The waiter was exceptionaly friendly but we felt we couldnt complain as for the most part we was the only customers and we would of felt awkward.the price I felt was good for fine dining but the slow slow service and not very nice tase was very disappointing.

“Use the early bird offer if you eat early, the food is the same.”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

It was a delightful meal. The street view is not impressive probably because the effort is concentrated on the food and wine. Once inside it was fine. The wine selection was excellent and there were half bottles and half litres as well as the usual full bottles. Complimentary bottle water and coffee are included.
