Melton's was a welcome find on an annual birthday trip to York from our home in Edinburgh. It is slightly off the well-trodden tourist trail around the Minster area and old town, but still only 20 mins from the main station or 5 mins by taxi.

Family owned for 23 years, the menu choice was varied and creative. I had pheasant instead of my usual steak choice and I am assured that the scallops and fish main were outstanding.

The wine list is extremely comprehensive for a smaller restaurant and even old favourites like Merlot and Sauvignon Blancs have more unusual varieties on offer. We went for a light Gavi which was perfectly chilled and sensibly priced at about £23 a bottle.

Melton's has worked hard to build up a clientele with theme nights and tasting menus which change regularly. A successful family run business like this which has perfected the art of a 5 star meal at 3 star prices deserves to be supported. I look forward to a return visit.

First the good points of our dinner at Melton's. Scallop starters were excellent. Puddings were too especially the hot raspberry soufflé which was gorgeous.
Unfortunately we both had sea bream with chorizo and puy lentils for our main course. The combination of flavours just didn't gel at all . Worse the sea bream fillets were raw in the centre. I know it's vital not to overcook good fish but there is a fine line between cooked to perfection and raw and this dish was the wrong side of it.
We chose this restaurant because of the many positive reviews but left were disappointed.

Myself and my partner visited York for a long weekend in September, and we booked a table in Melton's for our second evening. We had a great evening, everything from the menu, the food, wine, presentation, staff, service and atmosphere was fab. We both had the 5 course taster menu, and we thoroughly enjoyed each course. The wine they selected to go with each course was also spot on. This restaurant is slightly outisde of the York walls, so might not be an obvious choice if you're. visitng, however it is absolutely well worth a visit.

The restaurant is outside of the city walls and a little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. I had my second meal there recently and both experiences were great. The restaurant is small and has little in the way of fancy decor, but the food is outstanding. The staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive and the service timely. The menu is fairly limited, but beautifully prepared. There is no arguing that the restaurant is on the expensive side, but they do avoid irritating charges for water (which is complementary) and service charge is discretionary. I live locally and have many choices of restaurant. This is one of the top two or three in York. Well worth trying.

We visited with friends for dinner on a Friday evening. The presentation, quantity and quality of the food were excellent as were the staff being very friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. There is a restaurant downstairs which was busy and noisy but we ate in a more formal restaurant upstairs and it was very good. We started with a complimentary dish of tapas, hummus and toast as was the soup, bottled water and coffee. We had a bottle of House Wine which was good and reasonably priced.
We had a starter (around £7) a main course (around £20) and a sweet (around £6) and information was given on the source of many dishes.
