Description: This place is temporarily closed due to flooding on Dec 27, 2015. We do not anticipate being open before the 2nd Quarter of 2017. We will provide further updates on an estimated reopening date as we have this information available. Located near York Minster, The Blue Bicycle has become one of York's dining landmarks. With a French style English menu heavily weighted towards fish dishes, an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere, professional French waiters, and charming decor, it is no wonder this eaterie is often packed. The downstairs is particularly romantic and atmospheric -- it is allegedly a former brothel and the decor is true to it's blue period. Menu favourites include the chef's own spicy fish cakes with pineapple salsa, and grilled scallops with sweet chilli sauce to start, followed by a steaming bowl of monkfish and prawn chowder, or tuna with red onion, lime and coriander salsa.

We booked this for a special birthday celebration and were not disappointed. There were 6 of us in the party and we all really enjoyed our meals. The place is a bit quirky - it used to be a brothel and has pictures of nude women around the place. The menu is also a bit unusual and the accent was certainly on fish when we went, which suited all of us.

The little bread rolls were served in little flower pots - a lovely touch. Our waitress was very pleasant and we were not rushed at all.

Happened upon this place quite by accident. A happy accident as it turned out.
Cosy & warm ambience. Together with my partner we had carrot & orange soup for starter which had a delicate flavour but was lovely & creamy. It was served together with homemade bread served in what I can only describe as giant egg cups. Nice touch. We were also presented with a half a roasted garlic bulb. Delicious & something I have never seen before. For main I had a chicken breast dish, which tender & succulent. Also whilst we chose the cheapest red on their menu (£19) it was surprisingly smooth. Polite staff. A solid bet if you are in York..

There were 6 of us in our party and 5 of us had a great meal. The other person found it confusing and difficult to find what they might like. This place is a bit different. it does combine some out of the box different ideas. The Cod with a little meat pie on the side i thought was inspirational, yet some would find this confusing. You have to go to the Blue Bike with an open mind because its a bit different but nothing you cant get your head around. The food is cooked well and there is great attention to detail. The pudding, Deconstructed Lemon Meringue, It was exactly that, the components of the pudding had been created separately as a work of art. If you want your pudding in a dish with your standard lump of custard on top then dont book this place... If you want a great evening and have an open mind then go for it..

On a Saturday night we called in to see if there was a free table and we're told that if we were prepared to wait a few minutes maybe one would be. As we waited we read the interesting menu and were soon escorted to our table. We realised that there was live music which was an added bonus. The food certainly was interesting and not for those who would prefer traditional dishes. However, if you are prepared to try this place you are in for a real treat. Our food not only sounded interesting but tasted fantastic. The staff were very helpful and polite.

Too dark to read the menu without a light from a mobile phone.
Courses came too quickly after each other to give much confidence in the preparation care and quality. I always thought that Scallops meant more than at least two, I was wrong.
'wouldn't go back.
