Very old English ..Cucumber sandwiches on three tier racks but the choice of cakes, Teas and Coffees is excellent, always busy..always good..try it a little pricey but worth it..

“Flatters to deceive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Always a queue...therefore must be exceptional. But it's not! Yes, a very good location and there's something special about that ground-floor room, the great windows and the throw-back pleasure of three-tier cake stands and tea strainers. However, afternoon tea was very 'ordinary', picturesque and beautifully presented, but tired and lacking the star quality others seem to have found in it. The sandwiches were slightly stale, fillings lacked taste; the scones were also 'past it' and the portions of jam and cream miserly; the little cakes looked great and the chocolate cake and fruit tart were delicious, but the macaroon was disappointing.
Bettys is a special place and its reputation will ensure long queues far into the future, but only as long as management realises that reputation alone is not enough and constant attention to standards is essential.

“Simply superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013 via mobile

Went while in York for the weekend, pre booked for 2.30. Got a great table upstairs, really quick service and very friendly. Pianist was great. The food was sensational, no problem with bringing more if needed. Champagne was great. Can't wait to go back!!
