We stayed in room 5 which is a great room. Located a few flight of stairs up, the room faces the front street, is very quiet and has a tiny view of the top of the Minster. Nice sitting area in the room, and the bathroom has a large tub. This is a great location for walking. Minster is only a few blocks away. We would definitely stay here again.

On phoning to book I was given lots of help and guidance and good information on how to get there as a previous customer had been fined when crossing a bridge to get there. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast very enjoyable. Parking available which made our stay in York easy. What was very unusual, having paid the bill and about to leave, was the comment at the end 'when you have finished your walk around York this morning and come back to collect the car pop in and have a cup of coffee and use the toilet before you go' What a pleasant change!!

Lovely B & B just outside the city walls of York. We had a 4 poster room in the front which was spacious, immaculate and comfortable - with lots of plugs for computer, phones, etc. Hosts were gracious and location is outstanding - close to old city yet on a quiet street for sleeping. They have a car park in the back which is a real necessity in York. Very close to the York Minster for Evensong in the evening. Two excellent restaurants close by - Cafe Concerto and Cafe No 8! Highly recommend!!

The Hazelwood in York was a great choice. We had a nice room with a very modern bathroom. (I love those showers with one knob for temperature and another for strength.)

Walking into York from the Hazelwood was very easy.

Note, the free York walking tour provided by local volunteers starts about 2 blocks away. Don't miss it. The walking tour was very good and the tour guide was truly a volunteer - he refused a tip at the end.

Room Tip: When choosing a room, just beware there is no elevator. No problem with noise in any room.

My wife and I stopped for one night and from Ian helping with our bags to being given an hour or two's grace with moving our car from the parking spot after our stay, we can say it is a hotel we would be happy to return to.
A nice clean B&B throughout and a stones throw from the Wall & Minster.

Thanks Hazelwood

Spent only one evening at the Hazelwood but came away with a lovely, warm feeling about the little spot and the service. They were very responsive when making the reservation and the description of the property was exactly as we found it. Very well maintained, well appointed room, pretty little garden, very nice breakfast and lovely attention to service details. Beverley greeted us warmly and even carried a big suitcase up the 3 flights of stairs (no lift)! Only little quirk was the very tiny sink in the bedroom area instead of in the bathroom. Basement lounge not very inviting but didn't need it anyway. Location was perfect. Quiet street only a few blocks from the Minster and the charming streets for shopping and dining. Thumbs up to Hazelwood.

My wife and I have been working our way through great homes and castles of the UK, and decided to spend a night in York after a visit to Castle Howard. The Hazelwood had pretty good reviews, so we decided to spend the night here.

The following summarizes what we encountered, to potentially help others with their trip planning:

1. Navigating York is no easy task, especially as we were hitting the 5 pm traffic on a weekday. We did find Portland Street off of Jillygate, but the street was so narrow, I had my wife stop at the head of the street, and I walked down it to scoop out the situation, finding the Hazelwood about three quarters of the way down on the right. I rang the bell, and the owner shortly thereafter explained the parking situation...I had my wife drive back over to the next street, Claremont Terrace, where it was indicated that we would be met to get to the car park. Well, we drove down there, and the owner was not to be seen. Rather than have my wife negotiate the drive back over to Portland, I walked up Claremont, Gillygate, Portland, rang the bell, and found the owner had gotten tied up checking in a new arrival. Fortunately, she showed me the shortcut back to Claremont, and directed me to the very tiny alley which led from Claremont to the parking spot behind the Hazelwood. Not much social chitchat, most questions responded by “it’s in the book” of information provided in the room.

2. Our room was sizable (room 2 on the first floor). We were quite pleased not to have to carry our luggage up stairs. The bed, king size, was very comfortable. There was overhead, as well as bedside light, that was quite a bit better than one typically encounters in a B&B. The street was adequately quiet to allow us to keep the window open at night.

3. The WiFi worked great, fast.

4. The shower had great power and temperature...just a bit of a nuisance to have the sink located a good distance from the shower and toilet, in the bedroom, many feet away. The sink was of the variety wherein the hot and cold water are dispensed from separate faucets. There was no soap provided at the sink! There were no luggage racks, so our luggage was situated on the floor, and we accessed our belongings in that rather inconvenient fashion.

5. The B&B as everyone has already noted as extraordinarily well situated, very quick walk to the Minster and old York.

6. We requested a convenient dining spot, and The Hole in the Wall (separately reviewed) was a great recommendation. Although technically a pub, it has a great menu, and our food was truly delicious...not just another "fish and chips" place...and great prices.

7. The breakfast was served in a basically decorated dining area, nice music playing in the background. The coffee was good, as was the porridge, and the smoked salmon and eggs met our needs nicely.

The Hazelwood did meet our needs for a single night's stay in York, had many plusses, but the minuses did detract somewhat. So, we thusly decided that although not meeting our definition of a "5" rating, it was definitely better than a "3", so the "4" probably best reflects our perception of this site.
