We particularly wanted to stay close to York, so stayed at The Hazelwood for one night. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was spotless. There was everything we needed for a comfortable stay in the room with extra touches such as flapjacks in a tin. The parking is a bit tight but the advantage of being able to park outweighs this. Overall, a lovely friendly welcome which continued with us being able to leave the car, the next day, whilst we enjoyed York. The location is excellent being a few minutes into the centre of York - we would definitely stay again. Thank you!

Hi, stayed at The Hazelwood in York in May and couldn't have asked for a friendlier welcome. Was myself and my husband staying but wouldn't hesitate to take our 13 year old daughter with us, large clean rooms, nice lounge area and shortbread biscuits in the room too. The breakfasts were delicious, I had the vegetarian and then the scrambled eggs next day - perfect. Prior to the cooked breakfast there was everything you could have wanted in the buffet breakfast - and the tea and toast... very nice. The house is situated just behind the Minster so only 5 minutes walk to all the lovely restaurants in York, the only let down really was the rest of the street. Would definitely stay there again and will recommend it to friends.

Stayed there for a sat night (our wed anniversary) some weeks ago. As such we were hoping for something special. This was certainly not it!!! The rooms look impressive on the website, and significantly bigger. We had room number 14, with the purple/green interior. We paid £115 for the night. What we got was an objectively very clean room. Full stop. Nothing more than that!
Negatives:
1st, upon arrival we were waiting for about 20 mins at the door for someone to respond to the door bell. This was repeated twice!
2nd, when we called to make the booking we were explicitly asked about our arrival time so that they would make sure they had the room ready. We said around 12:15. After about 2 and a half hours of travelling we got there at 12:30. We were told that we won't be able to get in the room at least before 16:00, but that we could leave our luggage at the dining room!!! If anything there should be a secure storage place for such cases!!! The lady we spoke to had a rather bossy and miserable attitude, totally inappropriate for the service they imply they offer. And she then simply left, leaving us standing there. When I spoke to a different member of staff that I am not particularly impressed by the prospect of leaving our stuff somewhere in a dining room and what has been said to me on the phone while booking the room, she directed me to their website which apparently states that check in is at 4. This is by far what I call customer service!
3rd, with no other option available, we left our luggage in the car parked at what they called parking (under a big sign informing us that they have no responsibility if anything happens there), soon before the first lady INSTRUCTED us about the times that we could have breakfast in a very strict manner. The side comment, “no breakfast can be served after 9:45 sharp” did make me wonder whether I wanted to have this breakfast or not!
4th, yes, I shouldn’t have had the breakfast. The so called English breakfast was far from what one would expect from a 4* B&B. If anything, I tend not to appreciate human hair in my scrabbled egg…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Interestingly, we were not the only ones who didn’t like it. The couple next to our table had exactly the same conversation, poor breakfast and awful service!
5th, check out time: 11:00!!!!!!!!!! In other words we had to pay £115 for less than 24 hours!

Positives:
1st, already mention: spotless room
2nd, when the room was eventually ready, they did call us to let us know that we can go back
3rd, when we checked out, we were allowed to leave the car in the so called parking (the luggage was of course in the car)
4th, when we returned to pick up the car, there was a note on the windscreen encouraging us to contact the reception in order to pick up our mobile charger which we had left in the room. the person we spoke to this time was the only polite one we had seen within these almost 24 hours in this place.

Would I recommend it to someone else? NO. The negatives are rather important to be ruled out by the positives.

We have recently spent three nights at the Hazelwood, upon arrival we were warmly greeted and directed to our car parking space to the rear of the building which is a bonus. We had room 9, it is not the largest of rooms but it provided more than ample storage space, the bed is comfortable and the shower room is ok. Cleanliness is given great attention throughout the building. Breakfast was tasty and ample and sets you up for the day, having said that the dining room is slightly cosy. They have a basement lounge with a PC. The hazelwood is in an ideal location, at the top of Portland St. is Gillygate which leads into the town centre and is less than a ten minute walk to the minster. Overall I would reccommend this B&B and would definitely stay again when we visit York.

Room Tip: Room 11 is huge and has a four poster bed.

Just to put things in to context, I am a 54 year old father of a 13 year old girl and each year we go on holiday together for a few days/1 week and leave Mum at home, normally the 1st week of the summer holidays.
We have in the past "done" London, Paris and a week on an activity holiday, this year as a family we have stayed in 5 star hotels been camping and had a long weekend in a Centre Parc type resort .

We stayed in York Sunday to Wednesday and I can reccomend the Hazelwood without reservation.

ROOM
We paid £80 per night for a Twin room with ensuite (room 12 ground floor). The room was spotlesly clean niceley decorated, the beds were comfortable and the sheets linnen towels etc freshly laundered and in great condition. There was Tea, coffee & chocolate in the room along with biscuits and a couple of slices of fresh cake upon our arrival, these were restocked each day when our room was cleaned to a high standard.
BREAKFAST
This again was excellent with cereal, yogurt fruit, fruit juices plus a superd cooked breakfast with some options ie scrambeled eggs with smoked salmon, porridge, croissants all freely available, the breakfast room again was spotlesly clean , light, airy and niceley furnished.
The cooked breakfast uses really good quality ingredients as is as good as, if not better than many 4/5 star hotels in the UK, I have stayed in.
RESIDENTS LOUNGE in the basement
This sounds grimm, but it is a charming room with a fridge & Tea making facilities, a great place to read or use the PC that is provided, oh yes I nearly forgot free WiFi was also available.

STAFF

Now then, these people really are a credit and asset to the place, friendly, efficient, pleasant and offer some great infomation. They did so many small, helpful things it would be to hard to list them all, but as an example
We were going to book in on Saturday night but when they realised I was there with my 13 year old daughter they pointed out it was race night and a walk through York with large groups "celebrating" a day at the races could be challenging for a Dad with his 13 year old. we were therefore able to avoid this and arrive once all the "celebrants" had gone home!

Location
Excellent really close to the centre ie Minster, Shambles, City Wall, Art gallery etc in a quiet street.

Would I stay here again? Most certainly and have allready reccomended it to a work colleague who is going later on in the year
