We stayed here in early March when my boyfriend and I went to York to celebrate his birthday. The owners are fantastic people. As soon as we arrived Alan and Ann made us feel very welcome and they were extremely helpful. Alan helped me park my car on the driveway where it was kept safe overnight. We had a free bottle of sherry in our room which was a nice touch.

Room was spotless, bed was amazing and lovely decoration.

Can not fault this place at all.

Sorry it has taken so long to post this review I have been so busy with work commitments etc, and as a result I am only now able to write my reviews.

The location is amazing - only 10 minutes walk from the incredible town centre! The hosts are extremely welcoming and give some excellent home-town advice about what to see and do. There are lots of good pubs and restaurants in the vicinity that Adrian and Ann are happy to give you advice on. We changed our travel plans after our initial bookings and Adrian was very helpful in making alternative arrangements. A great deal of effort has gone into presenting this facility (Portmerion dinnerware and ornaments, Sheridan bed linen, wallpapered ceilings etc.) and it shows. The rooms are clean, spacious and tidy. Breakfasts are excellent with a wide, well-presented range of quality food. Their cooked breakfast is one of the best we experienced on our 7-week trip. Parking is a little tight but adequate and it has the advantage of being under video surveillance.

Room Tip: The stairs are quite steep and narrow but they have a range of options available if you have mobilit...

We stayed as a family of six (kids 10-17) at the Barbican for two nights! The service was fantastic and the house itself is in prime location within walkable distance to town. The owners were helpful even the night before their holiday. Sue (the manager for the week they were gone) could not have been nicer or more helpful. The breakfast was personalized for each of us to our liking - which was a bonus for our kids. The rooms were cozy and equiped with all we needed. Bathrooms emaculate and plenty of warm water with good fixtures. Thank you Barbican for making York an even more delightful stop on our tour of Great Britain!
P.S. We recommend Totos for Italian...fantastic Carbonara and pizza!

Room Tip: We stayed in rooms 2, 5 & 7 - one had twin beds and worked great for our kids!

Spacious and comfortable antique-filled room at edge of walled city, w/in walking distance of good pubs and restaurants, and tour busses. Excellent breakfast prepared by gracious hosts, Adrian and Ann. Their off-street parking is tight, but workable.

We stayed in Barbican House in July last year for our honeymoon. We took a bottle of champagne to enjoy that evening as a celebration of our marriage that day. The man who owned and ran the business offered to chill it for us and return it to us that evening. He then went out leaving our bottle locked away in their own accommodation. We were very disappointed and asked what had happened the next day, he said we hadn't asked for it soon enough and they don't get out often and decided his night at a pub was more important than his guests on their first nights honeymoon, he did not apologise and was very defensive and quite aggressive over the whole matter. Apart from the owners abysmal attitude, the decor in the main areas of the guest house was tacky and cluttered and the food was only average for the top price they charge.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

What a selective memory you have, we said to you both that we would chill you champagne and give you two glasses but asked you to come for them before 6 pm as we were going out, not to a pub as you have said in your review as we do not go to pubs, we were out with friends in a local Italian restaurant.
We waited in until 6.30pm for you to come for your champagne, we even went up to your room but you were not in.
As for being rude, you both were confrontational the next morning at breakfast time in front of other guests, you then blamed us for not being in when you came back after having your dinner, when we offered to chill your champagne we said to you that we were going out, you said no problem as you would pick the champagne up before 6pm.
All in all a terrible review, if a bottle of champagne meant so much to you then you should have been in at the time we both agreed on, as for marking us down on every other item how childish you are.

Just back from a 2 night stay at the Barbican. This was a convent base to explore York. The owners were friendly and gave good advice on places to visit and restaurants. The place is of a very high standard, including cleanliness, room facilities and breakfast with particular attention to small details.

I stayed here last weekend for one night, 8/06/13, the room was absolutely gorgeous and the hosts were very nice and accommodating, the welcome pack is great for places to eat etc. Its only a ten minute walk into York its self so is ideal. We had the ground floor room and even though the window faced out to a busy road we never once got woken up by traffic. Just one thing i would advise to the owners is to take the telephone off the hook or silence it as it rang a few times whilst we were in bed and even though we were just watching TV, this may have woken others up. Overall a great guest house and would definitely recommend it :)
