We arrived at the Naburn Station Hotel which wasn't very well signposted, and were greeted by Ann our host, and shown to our room. Which was interesting! There was a fridge in the room, but not plugged in! Probably due to the microwave being plugged into one of the two sockets, the other having the 9" screen television plugged into it. The aerial was nicely balanced on the kettle on top of the microwave.
Due to lack of length of lead we could only boil the kettle by placing it on the floor, not the end of the world, but a bit inconvenient.
Tea and coffee were provided but filling the kettle was a challenge as the tap in the bathroom meant you had to fill a mug and then pour this into the kettle. However there was no teaspoon in the room or sugar. I 'raided' the kitchen to find these items.
Whilst talking the bathroom I am glad I have mastered Yoga as it was rather a contortionist's act to get oneself comfortable on the throne, with the sink positioned almost at shoulder level on your right hand side. However the shower was roomy and the water hot and plentiful.
The actual bedroom was not overly roomy but sufficient, sharing a 'small' double bed with a pair of bunk beds filling more space. The bed was comfortable enough although at over 6' tall I could have done with a bit more room.
The room was tidy enough and clean-ish. not dirty but could have done with the cobwebs being dusted out of the corner of the ceiling. It would probably be difficult to deep clean the room but could also have been much worse.
Overall the Naburn Station Hotel is aspiring to be something it isn't yet achieving to be, it is trying to move from being a hostel to a B&B, and is quite clearly in a stage of transition. I can't say it was value for money at £60 for the pair of us, and disappointed that there was no breakfast offered, and no explanation as to whether one should have been or why one wasn't?!!
I'm afraid I can't recommend this hotel, but hope this isn't as much of a slating as some reviews I have read for this establishment, and I wish Ann all the best for moving this project forward,

Hi Dan, thank you for your review regarding your stay with us. We have taken on board your observations and are in the process of rectifying the problems you have noted. As you rightly state the building is in a transition phase where we are gradually improving the overall look and feel of the rooms, decorating and working with an electrician to update the rooms. We thank you for your custom and your feedback.

Kindest Regards

Andy

I enjoyed my stay here and so did my dog (which was important to me). The owners and their dogs friendly. Room was comfortable and clean and I had ensuite bathroom :) Ideal for cyclists as right next to Transpennine (good for dog walking too). Parking available. Large well eqipt kitchen and a good social room (tho maybe if there had been more people it might be a little small). All in all good value and would defo stay again!

I stayed at Naburn Station for one night because I needed somewhere cheap and cheerful to sleep while visiting York with my husband. I paid upfront before I had had a chance to really inspect the room. When I pulled back the duvets on all of the beds in the room, there were big clumps of human hair and stains. There was also a lot of human hair on the sink in the bathroom and the toilet. I know this is a hostel but how is it possible not to change bedding and clean a bathroom in between visitors? This is not only an appalling way to treat guests but a health hazard. I will certainly not be returning, nor would I recommend it!! Spend a bit more to stay in York.

I just moved in to York and was looking for a cheap place to stay while i'm searching for a flat. Naburn station was cheapest possibility, but as I realised, the nicest as well. Ann, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. She told me all about her cycling projects and the travels, which were amazing. You can feel very welcome here, the huge kitchen is really well equiped with all sorts of communal spices and cooking tools and other flatmates are keen on talking to you and helping out.

I strongly reccomend this place for newcomers, it's best place for a first rental and you could even stay for a long term if you only wish.
