We ate at 1pm on Friday and there was only one other customer in. Can't understand it.
The pub's been beautifully and sensitively renovated and the decor's full of interest. We were comfortable and cosy. Everything spotless, nothing skimped.
The service was friendly and brisk. CH had the turtle bean stew, aubergine/chickpea balls and coriander quinoa, and it was perfect: he thoroughly enjoyed it. If that's the same as a previous poster mentions - well, the quinoa wasn't dry and the sauce was very very edible. I only wanted a starter and chips, and still I couldn't eat it all: beautiful chunky chips, crisp and still hot when we finished, and ham hock, black pudding and plum terrine with a stack of thick tasty toast and butter, and celeriac slaw.
We'll certainly be back. Dining out in York gets better and better and this is a top example. Oh, and there's a large beer garden, which we can try next year.More
