Beware, this hotel (b&b) is at least an half hour walk to the very outskirts of York city centre which sounds doable but trust me, its a bloody nightmare unless you like a very long walk along busy streets which are in no way historic or picturesque. On your retun to holgate bridge "hotel", tired and in need of sustenance after a day of sightseeing you will find that the accommodation provides nothing at all in the way of snacks, drinks etc, even a vending machine would have been a welcome sight to a weary, hot traveller but alas it was not to b & the nearest convenience store was yes, another bloody 10 min walk away. The 'double' room we had was tiny, dingy (1reading lamp!!!!) no mirror apart from a wee one in the ensuite bathroom- dont get me started on
that - tiny, no hot water in shower, cracked tiles, could go on........ No idea why this place is advertised as an hotel, it has abs no facilities at all. Trades on the fact that it is in York, regardless of that fact that its nowhere near anything historic, gastronomic, picturesque etc, On the plus side, breakfast was nice & there is secure parking, that's it,,,,,,,,,,,,,

We spent 2 nights at the Holgate Bridge Hotel in July. From the train station we caught a bus that dropped us right in front of the hotel - couldn't have been simpler. The same bus took us right into town and came often. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly. Our room was fine - a double with a shared bath. We were disappointed to find that the bathroom was through 2 doors and down some stairs. We use the bathroom in the middle of the night - and were concerned for our sleepy safety! When we booked, we had no inkling that there would be a heat wave and our room was uncomfortably hot and it was difficult to sleep. Our room also overlooked the street and it was noisy most of the night.

Breakfast was nice, but both mornings, we had to wait to get a table. Service was a little slow, being that everyone there eats at the same time. We had to meet friends and ended up inhaling our food once it arrived so we could make our appointment. If breakfast was served over a longer stretch of time, people would come down at different times and service would improve. The food looked good though - people seemed to be enjoying it, especially the meat eaters!

I know I am complaining, but I don't consider this a bad review. This was our first stop in England and we, as Americans, had to acclimate to the way things are done here. We tend to live on a faster pace and had to slow down. The shared bathroom was a surprise, as HOTELS.COM assured us we had a private bath when we called them to verify conflicting information on their site - so not the fault of the Holgate Bridge Hotel. And who could predict a heat wave!

Overall, the Holgate Bridge was clean, friendly, charming and conveniently located.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room that faces the street.

Very nice B&B, 10 mins walk from Micklegate Bar. This is a bit further out than we are used to staying in York, but it turned out to be OK. A short walk from the station. The room was comfortable and warm room (it was December when we stayed there), although the sound-proofing could do with a little improvement. It did not disturb our sleep, however and the breakfasts were superb! Would certainly stay there again. Many thanks!

As the title states this establishment does not pretend to be anything different than a good clean b&b. Food is good with a variety of cereals and juices to start followed by a well cooked breakfast of your choice. Staff are polite and efficient and are very knowledgeable of the area as they should be, also are very welcoming. Our room was very clean but basic, but as this was a late booking we didn't expect the Ritz, so no complaints. Walking distance to York centre was approx 10/15mins, the Railway Museum was approx 20/25mins.If you are looking for a good clean b&b just a few minutes walk into York at a reasonable price then look no further, also there is free onsite parking at the rear of the property.

Room Tip: We were allocated a room at the rear that was very quiet.

Stayed at the Holgate Bridge Hotel for one night in May. Easy book in and out at reception. Clean Hotel, standard , spacious accommodation with a shower en suite. The room was quiet and the beds were comfortable.Great base to see this fantastic city. Ten minute walk and you are in the city centre with all of the sites and shops. Plenty of bars and eateries close by but no noise. The breakfast was perfectly cooked and just right to set us up for a 6 hour tour of York. The owners offered to let us use the car park after we checked out and the staff were all friendly and accommodating. Many attractions in the city but the Train Museum is really worth seeing. It is free however "donations" are requested and with a hint of "Time share" type intimidation at the entrance with people guiding you to the till to "donate". Worth the £3 "donation" though.

Room Tip: We were at the rear of the Hotel which was quiet.

The Holgate Bridge Hotel was lovely. My only criticism is that it was noisy at night because of the traffic going past at the front of the hotel (which I`m not used to so couldn't get to sleep). Friendly, homely and excellent breakfast. Plenty of clean white towels and clean, comfortable bedding. Our two children had separate beds in the family room which was spacious and bright. Bus stop right outside if you don't fancy walking to City and close to station. Loads to do in York and the hotel was an excellent base.
