“Friendly, welcoming and great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

We stopped for a snack on our way to York recently and were very happy with both the food and the service. The main bar area is roomy with comfortable seating. The staff were friendly and even took the time to write out directions for us as we were not sure how to get to our hotel. We returned a few days later with our son and daughter-in-law and had an excellent, leisurely evening meal. We all chose different things and each dish was delicious; hot, attractively presented and generous portions. My fish pie was tasty and full of large chunks of fish. Desserts too were lovely (recommend the citrus ice cream cake). The beer was extremely well priced. The food is very good pub standard and we would happily return.

“"A Quiet Meal"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2013

Situated on the A64 travelling into York from the A1, towards Scarborough, just after the Bilborough Top Services sign, TURN OFF, this is a very quiet pub.

It serves Samuel Smith beer and has an extensive menu, with the usual suspects, but it has what I consider is the absolute pinnacle of dining:-
NO MUSIC !!!

You can sit in the pub, order your drinks, enjoy your meal, and THANK YOU, no background noise!

The selection of beers is from the Samuel Smith Brewery, and so there will be a choice that all should enjoy. The menu is varied and well balanced and when we visited the food was very good.

A nice stop on the way to your final destination. In my view.?
Let me know if you agree or not.

“Excellent pub grub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013 via mobile

Last night on our trip to York. Checked out TripAdvisor and thought we would take a trip back down the A64 to this roadside pub.

Boy are we glad we did. Opted for Steak pudding and my good lady wife had one of the burger variations. Both arrive with large portion of rustic chips and the pudding arrives with plentiful amount of FRESH VEG (broccoli , collie and Brussels sprouts). Saw the onion rings on an adjacent table so we ordered a portion also. Tastiest onion rings you could imagine for

Never had such fresh veg from a pub and the meat in our meals tasted divine.

Very friendly barstaff and made to feel very welcome.
Will definitely be calling in again

Thanks

“Friendly Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013 via mobile

We had intended to eat in this pub on previous visits to the area and for many reasons had never done so! What a mistake on our part!
Don,t expect "fine dining" just good quality home cooked wholesome food with friendly service!that is what we experienced and we'll be going back again to further sample it.

“Very good food and excellent service.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2013

We went as a group of family and friends. It's great to see that, unlike most pubs these days where service is a thing of the past, there are still hostelries that have a separate dining room where you can sit down as a group and be waited on. The food is of very good quality and the service is excellent. No fighting your way to the bar to place your food order at this establishment. Definitely a cut above the rest!
