Description: Welcome to the Whippet Inn, York's newest Steak and Alehouse. We have now been open for just over a year and very proud to have marked the occasion by by winning 'Best Restaurant ' in the Visit York Tourism Awards 2014. So far we have raised a few eyebrows with our name, and many have said that our interior is certainly quirky if not a little risque, all of which we love as we want to be unique and fun. When it comes to the food and drinks we serve however; we are very serious... When we set about creating The Whippet Inn our main aim was to get the best food produce we could find in Yorkshire and then pair it with real ales, lagers, spirits and wines from around Great Britain. Yorkshire beef is our thing offering you 28 day or 40 day aged beef but we have something for everyone, be it, lunch & a lite bite, dinner or just a drink in our bar.Our bar is an eclectic mix of Real Yorkshire Ales - right through to over 30 bespoke gins- we maybe small but we have used every nook and cranny to ensure we have an amazing range to offer our quests. All this is delivered with down to earth homely Yorkshire hospitality. Another of our aims was to create a place where our guests could enjoy themselves with friends over dinner or to have a relaxing drink in the bar , a kind of home from home

“Good Lunch”
Reviewed June 27, 2014

Convivial dining room (only marred by the piped music .... why do we have to have music playing?) and friendly service. All our meals were very good quality and well prepared. Chicken really tasted of chicken, and the burger was top class. We were pleased we had chosen to lunch here. (Good beer on tap as well.) Enjoyed the decor generally (especially in ladies loo!).

“Great steaks, great service”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

Lived in York for over two years but rarely ventured down to this part of town. Quirky looking restaurant and a very nice atmosphere. Very helpful and attentive staff, and top marks to Joe our waiter who was very knowledgeable about the extras on the menu. My Partner had a fantastic burger which probably was the best we've had inside the city walls, whilst my T-Bone was perfectly prepared and complemented unusually by sweet potato chips. Overall, there is some hot competition in York, especially in the more distant villages and the Whippet isn't the cheapest.....but I'd say it's well worth a visit and if you're a tourist then make the effort to walk the 10 minutes across the Lendal or Ouse Bridges and turn down North Street. We'll certainly be back.

“Best burger I ever had!”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

Enjoyed the quirky atmosphere, contemporary background music and super friendly staff. Greeted and seated by Morgan on arrival, and order taken by Rose who was very approachable and helpful on deciding our order. Opted for the chicken burger which was gourmet to say the least! Chips were spot on too. Can't wait to go back for the beefburger, or perhaps the 40 day aged steak! Very satisfied with the whole experience,

“Great steaks...but”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

not everything else matched that standard.

Ordered bread and oils to start with the bread was stale - all of it. I could understand if it was just one bread that had a firmer texture but not all of it. Its an easy start/nibble to get right unfortunately it wasn't here. We don't like complaining or making a fuss so we soldiered on

Steaks 40 day aged rib eye was fantastic...Chips that came with it a bit anaemic but fine the Mrs didn't enjoy her sweet potato chips felt they were over cooked.

We shared a sticky toffee pudding. The pudding was excellent moist with lots of sauce but the ice cream that came on it was terrible. Tasteless with such a great cake underneath it a real let down.

I might go again the steaks were good. The staff were friendly although as service got busier later on in the night a couple seemed to get very flappy which isn't good when your sat right next to them.

Music selection was good, restaurant area is small so would advise booking

This is the best dining experience that we have had in York
The restaurant itself is quirky ( love the wall paper in the bar!!)
The service was very friendly and well informed
The menu is very well balanced something for everyone and its very well cooked
Try the deep fried Gherkins- sounds odd but works as a snack
Also very good value for money
loved it at the Whippet
its very firmly on our list
