Lunchtime in York and everywhere is busy, huge queues at every restaurant and café - luckily we remembered Dusk where we'd had a good-value lunch last year and - brilliant! - they had a table big enough for 5 of us. Dusk goes back quite a way and has a huge upstairs so it is worth investigating. Not sure why it isn't busier, especially as it is right in the city centre - perhaps because it looks a bit dark and studenty (it is more of a club at night with live music), but we have all enjoyed our two lunches there. Service is friendly and efficient and there is a good variety of paninis, bagels, etc. with various fillings; they are all very filling and you aren't rushed (unlike in some of the restaurants and cafes which have long queues).. Good value.
