“Tainted stay due to theft! Site very good though.”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

The site is very nice with a great amenities block. The owner, Barney, is very nice and friendly and each pitch has a fire pit for the evening marshmallow roasting. Barney has a little shop that sells milk, eggs, cider and bits of other things and the local butcher comes each weekend so you can purchase your BBQ favourites. The only down side for us was on our first night someone stole our Cadac cooker grill pan rendering our Cadac useless. The item had been left in the pot wash area to dry but had vanished when we went to collect. Barney was reasonably helpful in that he allowed me to view his CCTV footage but unfortunately his knowledge on how to use the system didn't allow us to locate the thief! Whilst we were there another family had some hoodies disappear and we were informed that in the previous year similar crimes had been reported. Whilst packing away our tent we also heard Barney apologising to another family but unfortunatley we couldn't hear why. I'm not saying that theft is common here at all but describing our experience. On the whole the site is lovely but I just feel that the theft tainted our stay and Barney could have been a little more helpfull and understanding of our frustration!

Barney S, Owner at The Hideaway at Baxby Manor, responded to this review, September 22, 2013
Hi Paul, thank you for your review and for the positive comments, I just wanted to respond to your review so that other people could be rest assured The Hideaway is not a den of corruption and theft as it does sound a little like one on the review and reviews are very important to us!
Unfortunately the theft of your grill was the first of its kind here at The Hideaway, we had not had a problem with thieves before as you state in your review? Perhaps just a mis-heard comment as I do remember saying to you that we had had no problems at all the previous year and it was somewhat disappointing that we have had had two thefts on the same day this year.
Someone else staying on the site at the same time as you did have some clothing taken from the drying room as you say but these have been the only 2 incidents since we opened.
We do have CCTV on site as you know but as is with all CCTV all you can do to pin point a certain 'act' caught on tape over a 12 hour period is to do what we did and play the tape back in real-time, I realise after about an hour and a half of looking through the tape (to no avail) I had to leave you in the office looking at the tape yourself, I am sure you could appreciate at the time I had over 100 other people on site that morning.
My sincere apologies that this incident occurred and I hope you do not mind me responding to your comments.

A lovely campsite, well laid out, very eco friendly. Good facilities, nice shop, and best of all each pitch has a Fire Pit so you can enjoy Toasted marshmallows in the evening.
Barney the owner is very friendly, always on hand if needed and is enthusiastic about the green credentials and the business.

Thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting to visit York, it's just short drive to the excellent Park and Ride facility.

We opted for staying in a bell tent which looked very big & spacious on the website but was quite small when we got there. Ours was situated next to 2 larger bell tents. The facilities were great & so clean. No waiting for showers. The campsite is set out really well with all the tents in a circle & facilities in the middle. A little shop in reception sells most of what you might need & locally made cider from the village. The best part was the firepits & being able to hire a tripod to cook on.

This was our 2nd time camping here, it's just as nice and clean as it was when we came last year. Barney is so friendly and helpful. There is plenty to do at just a short drive away. Unfortunately there was one group who spoilt one night by playing music until 3am (which it states clearly on notices, no noise after 11pm) but it was dealt with and normal tranquility resumed. We will definitely be back again and would highly recommend to anyone.

The Hideaway made my 1st time experience of camping a good one. The pitches are well spaced apart from each other, the site is clean and tidy, the facilities block is well maintained, the fire pits are a big bonus as you don't find them on many sites over the Country, the setting is fab and Barney a pleasure to deal with. I was dreading camping but The Hideaway has persuaded me to go again, I just hope, fingers crossed, that the next site lives up to The Hideaway, it has big boots to fill.

As a family of four, we all had a really lovely two night stay, owner very helpful, it was exceptionally clean. This meant the children didn't want to leave the campsite to visit anywhere else, which meant we hardly spent any money which is always a bonus… Cannot wait to go again.

A great campsite. We stayed here on two pitches as a family group, aged 4 to 47. Nothing was too much trouble when booking. We had pitches together, with lots of space. The campfire was an added bonus to an idyllic setting. The shower block is lovely, clean and newly built, no complaints. No noise after 11 is a rule but don't be put off, chatting around the campfire is not a problem. It is more rowdy behaviour they are looking to stop. We really enjoyed our holiday, the campsite and Yorkshire really impressed me on every level. We will return.
