I booked this place and then read the reviews on here which really put me off but I have to say that I had a lovely stay! The lady on reception was very friendly and recommended a lovely river walk to me. I was given a double room even though I'd booked a single at no extra cost and it was a really nice room. I loved the fact that the place is quiet and the staff don't constantly bother you. I'd definitely stay again!

guy on reception didn't seem to have a clue what he was doing, kept asking for credit card numbers e.t.c even though I was paying in cash. Had to wait 45 mins to check in as he was on the phone to what sounded like his girlfriend. Room was cramped and dirty with 3 beds when I asked and payed for a single. Bed wasn't comfy at all. TV didn't work and staff refused to help sort it out also quite old. Bathroom was tiny, could hardly sit on the toilet. No hot water what so ever even from taps. Have to pay for use of a towel but that didn't bother me too much. Was really noisy even gone 11pm due to traffic outside . Had a Terrible nights sleep. Some sockets overloaded so i unplugged alot of things for fear of a fire. Doors didn't close properly and some locks were a bit flimsy. Furniture draws were stiff and most had rubbish e.t.c. left in them, also rubbish left under beds. Curtains didn't close properly, neither did the room light. (room 4 1st floor). Space between beds was miniscule so manouvaring yourself around the room was a challenge in its self. Wifi was slow but oh well. Milk smelt out of date in room. Bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a few months same with the rest of the room with heaps of dust gathering on finger when moved over windowsill... Personally It was a terrible experience and wish I had paid the £10 extra to stay in the hotel over the road which I looked at quickly in the morning just for comparison and was 10 times better. Paid £30 for the night and in all seriousness, if i had known it was going to be this bad, i might have considered buying a heap of energy drinks and just not slept that night and stayed at the train station or something similar... STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL!

Not bad for a couple of nights, walking distance from the city and quite a nice walk, room was clean and the sheets changed during the day. It was quiet when we stayed and the telly was appreciated. Possibly a little over priced for what you get as there aren't any frills but not bad if you're going to be out in the town most of the time.

I work in York but have a long commute so sometimes stay at Astley House and that's something that I wouldn't be able to afford to do at most places in York - especially if wanting a room for just one person. I think that I've stayed in 3 of the rooms now but it may be 4. The bathrooms are basic and the TVs can be a bit tricky to work out sometimes but, for me, that's outweighed the price. I think some of the other reviews haven't really taken into account the cost and as for church bells - there are quite a few of those in York! Parking is free on the cobbled outside the church opposite (you have to be inside the lines). I've always managed to get a parking space but sometimes had to drive round a few times until one becomes available - one of the tricky things about accommodation in an area with a lot of parking restrictions. Something to be aware of is that the check-in time is a little restrictive so you just need to take that into account when planning a stay. There is quite a high service charge if paying by card rather than cash so, again, something you may want to consider.

We stayed here for one night in April for a small trip to York for shopping/sightseeing. We paid £30 for the four poster double room with en suite but you could have paid £25 if you wanted just a double room which i would advise you do as the four poster wasnt really worth the extra £5.

The room was number 5 and overlooked the road and church. Although it did overlook these we didnt hear anything from the road regarding noise nor did the clock on the church chime every hour so whoever wrote that lied! or was super sensitive to noise!

The room was spacious and clean and the bed was comfy warm and well covered with two pillows each that werent thin. The front reception is rustic looking warm and welcoming. I like the old fashion look to it. It was very clean and tidy. Plenty of information on offer for what to do and see in York.

Lady at reception was lovely and polite very helpful and friendly.

The hotel is situated a 15 minute walk from York Centre. If youre slow it will be around 20. It is however down one flat single road so you cannot get lost! There is free parking round the back of the hotel or out the front on the cobbles outside the church. I would advise you dont drive into the centre as the car parks are costly!

Ok so the pros:

+ Close to the centre of town to walk but far away enough to stay clear of noise and traffic.
+ Spacious rooms with en suites and no bathroom sharing!
+ Friendly helpful reception desk/lady.
+ Lovely looking hotel outside and in!
+ VALUE FOR MONEY - this was the cheapest "centre of town" Hotel in York
+ Close to a local Spar Shop
+ Free WIFI although the code is down stairs? Why not include it in the room to save you walking down to get it?
+ Hairdryer Provided
+ Freeview TV
+ Plenty of wardrobe space, drawers and mirrors

Cons:

- Bathroom was tiny and dated. The shower doors didnt even close so we ended up flooding the bathroom! Sink was easily coming off the wall i leaned on it a tiny bit and it was rocking quite a bit!
- Dont pay £1 for the towels TAKE YOUR OWN!
- No toiletries at all. I know the room was cheap but a small bottle of showergel or/and shampoo wouldnt go a miss!
- There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room but the tea bags were in a glass jar...i prefer them individually wrapped with the string on so you know they havent been handled and are fresh.
- READ THE NOTES ON THE BACK OF THE DOOR! it says you will be charged for stains? I find this a bit rude to be honest! I mean vomit on the floor YES but if you have an accident why should you pay? Sorry but i dont agree with that.
- Curtains in the toilet? Blinds would be better...
- Only one table lamp? Not good for if the other half falls asleep or is tired before you! The main light was also a saver and got brighter with time...not good if your in a rush to get ready for a night out and cant see much!
- No luggage holder
- Radio left on in reception till gone 2am
- No food or drink allowed in the rooms yet they dont provide any food on site? We had wine and pizza in the room i didnt see the problem with it really we took our rubbish out afterwards.
- No glasses for water or cleaning teeth with just two VERY small cups for tea.
- Not enough UHT milks - 4 for two people.....
- No phone for reception. I had to go down and ring the bell which took ages to be replied to by someone who didnt sound best pleased when i told him i couldnt work the TV
- No smoking area. Some of us do smoke! Had to stand out on the street.
- No Towel Rail in Bathroom.

If you want a night out in York then id recommend this hotel on price.
If you want something a bit more then id recommend paying £60 for one of the other hotels in town (the best western looks amazing overlooking the minster) Not for kids as its right on a main road.

3/5 for us. Clean tidy friendly but lacking in basic areas.

well what can i say except dont even think about staying there. the room was scruffy an old blue couch in bay window with the stuffing hanging out of the seat, paper on the ceiling hanging down
bathroom dirty and rusty shower. one of the sliding doors was missing on the shower leaving a big
gap but we were assured by the owner that was the design and the floor wouldnt get wet well guess what a bathroom floor that ducks would be happy on. we were staying for the weekend and had to practically beg for extra milk we were told by the owner that there was a sainsburys up the road and the milk was complimentary and we had already had our allowance.
