A great tour with a very knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide (I believe she was called Angela). And it really is free. Other tours say they are free but there is an expectation that a tip will be forthcoming. This tour actually was free; no tip expected. The only negative aspect was that it wasn't long enough - the Clifford's Tower area wasn't covered. But everything else was excellent.

I read about the AVG tours in a guide book, but had to convince my slightly reluctant husband that this would give us something new, as we had already done the wall walk, and walked around the town ourselves.
He was completely won round, however. We visited little corners we had missed (Holy Trinity Church was a highlight) and the guide provided answers to lots of things we had been wondering as we explored the city. I imagine that some guides are better than others, but our guide was lovely and very knowledgeable.
It is completely free, and there is no awkward collecting of tips at the end.
Thoroughly recommended.

Our guide knew a lot about York and was very enthusiastic about it, but seemed very much more enthusiastic about talking to a pair of young ladies who were on the tour. This meant that for a lot of the time he was facing in the direction of just a couple of people at the very edge of the group and had his back to most of the rest of us so we couldn't hear him. Sigh.

We did get a good walk round York and an introduction to its geography and history though, so considering it was free I can't really complain!

We waited with 20 other people for 20 minutes then left...what an underwhelming experience!

Nobody answers on the phone.
