“Two night stay in York”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

We stayed here for two nights in early August, we were booked on a steam train excursion from York station starting at nine fifteen in the morning and we needed accommodation close to York railway station, the walk to York station was fifteen minutes maximum so this hotel worked well for us. The attractions of York are also just a short walk away.
We had booked into a superior double room but when we got to the hotel we were pleased to find that we had been placed in a nice apartment on the ground floor.
The apartment was fitted out with good quality furniture and a nice kitchen area with fridge which let us keep our food and wine nice and cool ready for the train trip the next day.
The bathroom was also of good quality.
We could see the hot tub building from our window so we booked that for a hour in the evening. The hot tub was a great experience.
We were down early for breakfast on our first morning but a lovely hot breakfast was soon served to us, the black pudding in particular I think was excellent.
Because of this early service we were in plenty of time for our train excursion.
Our second day was just as good so we really enjoyed our stay at this hotel

Great staff, and amazing breakfast. Brill location easy access to town centre. And the wall river and other great activities. We were made very welcome and early book in was no problem to them at all.

Thanks

I've stopped here a few times now, and I cannot fault this hotel. The staff are very very friendly. All the managers, Mandy, Sarah and Andrew bend over backwards to help their guests. The family that own the Hedley have gone to great lengths to ensure the place has every comfort even a spa and hot tub!!
The location is perfect for a sightseeing trip or for a night out in the city!!
Overall... Top notch :0)

Room we paid for was a superior double. Nothing superior about this room, was 2 twin beds pushed together! Quilt over bed was a double inside a king sized quilt cover, mattress cover didn't even fit! Decor was from the late 70's. got moved to another room only difference one bed not two. Bath had hair from previous occupant, bath towels were very dirty.mould growing around shower screen and on complimentary toiletry holder. Doors and windows rattled in slight breeze. Floorboards creaked with slightest movement. Breakfast cold. Only good thing about this hotel is it's location. Extremely over priced and not at all like pictures in website ! Night Porter very friendly and helpful only good thing about our stay !

Hedley House, situated a short and scenic stroll from York's historic core, is an attractive, well-run hotel, and one would seem hard pressed to find better lodging at this price range.

Our stay at Hedley House lasted three nights, and upon arrival we were pleased to discover numerous nice touches on offer. As regards service, from the front desk to the wait staff at breakfast and dinner, it was consistently professional. The Hedley staff helped us arrange a taxi ride from York to Leeds Bradford Airport and, more significantly, there is a much-appreciated and reasonably priced one-day laundry service. To our mind, an in-house laundry service is an often underappreciated part of the holidaymaker's experience. Another nice feature of the Hedley House experience is its restaurant which features quality yet reasonably priced dining. We found the ability to dine in-house most appealing, especially on our first night after having just arrived in York from abroad.

Our room was a bright and tidy double, with perhaps the most noteworthy feature its large, modern bathroom. There was a large bed/shower combination, with ample pressure and hot water. It should be noted, however, that we did not receive fresh towels one day, despite the fact that we had left a couple used towels on the floor as instruced by a small sign in the bathroom. But no worries, as we found our bathroom large and well illuminated. Another plus, our bed was far more comfortable than we're accustomed to at this price point, and while air conditioning isn't on offer, one suspects it isn't often needed in northeast England. Our room also came with a large flat screen cable TV.

Breakfast at Hedley House will provide a good kick start to your day of sightseeing. On offer is a selection of cold cereals, pre-cut fruit, yogurt, juice and coffee. Pretty much everything you'd expect, though we would have liked to have seen cheese, fresh breads, and flavored yogurts. Still, the hotel does offer a variety of cooked breakfasts, and we experienced a few days' worth of scrambled and fried eggs, along with nicely prepared mushrooms and tomatoes. The coffee at Hedley House is piping hot, nicely presented, but only fair in quality.

In summation, Hedley House appears to be a tidy, well run accommodation, one with no significant shortcomings. Indeed, we enjoyed our stay here very much. The city of York has much to recommend it, and the same could certainly be said for Hedley House Hotel.

Excellent location, especially if traveling by train. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean. We only had the breakfasts, however that was also top quality. Quiet although could hear the people in the room above walking around in the middle of the night, so I would request upper floor.

We stayed for five nights recently during a romantic trip to York. The weather was hot, and the rooms were even hotter. This caused severe problems at night time and our sleep suffered. This was very incovenient. Some sort of air condition would be very preferable. The front desk was unmanned at several occasions and we had to wait fifteen minutes when we checked in. The cleaning of the rooms seemed haphazard as well. On one occasion we were promised fresh towels in thirty minutes, but none came. I believe that the manager was on vacation, so this might be the reason for all this. Our room was tiny, but I believe other rooms are larger. At least those we saw during cleaning were. We literally had to climb over the bed in order to get up. There was no room to move at the foot end.

We only had breakfast the day of our departure, and it was satisfactory. Standard English fare, for better or worse. It was not included in the price, and you can get a better breakfast for a better rate down the road.

Anyway, this all sounds very negative, but I find that it's only fair to point out these things for the hotel to get better. The location is brilliant in a quiet street, and a big thank you to the lady who helped us catch our train by pointing out a shortcut to the railway station. We did not try the spa facilities (which are free) or the dinner menu.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the street get very hot. Room 5 is tiny.

Thank you for your review, we do take criticism on board and learn from it. Room 5 is a standard double room, which is a smaller room but has all of the same facilities as the larger doubles. If the reception desk is un-manned then there is a sign stating that if you require assistance you just need to press the buzzer.
We don't generally need air conditioning in the North of England, but do have fans available for guests to use.
We apologise about the towels, and this will be brought up with our housekeeping team.
We hope that these issues did not hinder your stay in York and that you return again in the future
