“A Curate's Egg”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2009

The welcome was certainly warm - which made it difficult to point out faults: the toilet only flushed properly if I removed the cistern cover; one of the twin beds had a more or less detached headboard, which meant it would have wobbled every time I turned over; the other one had a footprint on the sheet; the glasses I used on the first evening were not replaced the next day; there was shampoo but not shower gel. How can these things not be noticed? The breakfast was good and the parking was excellent, but I shall not return, as I did not find the room very palatable. No use to say I should have complained: the owners must be aware of these things.

The house itself is well located within walking distance from the centre of town. The people who run it are very welcoming and helpful. On the downside, the rooms at the front are very noisy. Usually I sleep thro everything but this was a step too far. People were shouting in the street below till 5.30am. It must have affected others staying there too because one woman said that at 3.00am a naked man had run up the street. Maybe that's a recommendation?!
There were a couple of other grumbles. The shower wasn't as clean as it could have been, and at breakfast, the spoon in the sugar bowl had previously stirred coffee. Also the small milk jug brought with the tea had dried milk around the inside.

We are so sorry you had a disappointing stay at The Apple House. The rooms at the front of the house can be noisy which is why we now have triple glazed windows and provide earplugs for lighter sleepers. We make no secret of the fact that as a very central B and B there can be noise particularly on a Saturday night during the race weekends which I explained to you at the time of booking. The 'naked man' story was relayed to you by me not any other woman so you were fully aware of what had happened once in the past. We have excellent cleaning staff but we apologise if our standards did not meet yours.

I took my boyfriend to York for a weekend for his birthday, and found the Apple House online. Compared to the prices of some of the more generic city centre hotels, the Apple House proved to be better value for money.

The location is fantastic, 10 mins walk from Mickelgate and about 15 to the city centre. The large car park at the back meant we could drive from leeds no problem, and on the walk there is a small sainsbury's which is useful for buying snacks/water on your way into York.

When we arrived we were shown to our room, which was massive, spotlessly clean and very nicely decorated. We had a double bed and an additional single bed which was great, lots of storage space and a nice en-suite. As expected there was tea/coffee facilities, and a tv - and a nice extra was the tourism guides in the hotel room, including one written by the b&b owners, which was helpful.

Breakfast was lovely - selection of cereals, fruit, and yoghurts, then a menu for cooked breakfast. Tasty and served quickly.

The Apple House is great if you're looking for comfortable accommodation just outside of the city centre, with breakfast included. We had a lovely stay and would definitely come back!!

Had a 2day break for visit to friend/sightseeing. Apple house easy to find, large car park, convenient for city. Room small (but as I was a single traveller, that didn't matter), clean, well furnished with a small but adequate bathroom and exceptionally comfortable bed. Breakfast was freshly cooked and tasty with fruit, cereal, yoghurt etc. also available. Pam was very friendly and helpful.
Crystal Palace a few doors away worth a visit for Sam Smiths Brewery Bitter @ £1.39/pint

We were a family of five staying in York overnight and we chose this B&B as they were able to accommodate us all in one suite. We had a great suite with two rooms, one had a bunk bed and the other a double bed and a single bed. The bathroom was clean and spacious. We found this accommodation comfortable and in a great location, within easy walking distance to all the sights of York. Pam, the owner, was very friendly and helpful and even went out of her way to organise an early breakfast for us. We enjoyed our stay in this B&B and would happily recommend it to our family and friends.

Just returned from the Apple house York. We stayed 2 nights in room 9 which is on the top floor. The room is nicely furnished and overlooks the main road. The room is a bit small for the amount of furniture it has in it but on a plus side there is plenty drawer space and a wardrobe. This room has a king sized bed and comfy.

The room has a modern flat screen tv with a built in dvd player which was a bonus because we didnt expect this.

They provide a selection of dvds and board games that can be borrowed during your stay, there is also an ironing board, iron and hair dryer.....

Large private car park, 10 minute walk into town so well located. Outside the back door overlooking the carpark there is a seating area where people can smoke.

The owners were very friendly and knowledgable about the area.

Nice breakfast, good selection. Only downside was time served it was 8am til 9am (even on a sunday), it would have been nice if a little later!

We would stay again, good value for money. We will possibly be returning again later this year!
