Had a really nice stay at this comfy homely Hotel..its just a short walk to the city centre with pubs along the way and plenty of places to eat from retaurants to Kfc...everything to suit every ones taste.
The breakfasts were absolutely spot on! So tasty!

My husband and I booked to stay here for our wedding anniversary, we booked a "superior double" to say we were dissapointed with the room would be an understatement, the pictures provided of the rooms are misleading, the superior double we were placed in had a standard double bed of poor quality and was very small, our room was actually the fire escape room and so not very secure at any time the room could have been entered as the key was in "smash glass box" on the outside of the door, the decor was also unimpressive with wallpaper peeling etc., the bathroom lights had brown liquid stains on them, the shower ran hot & cold minute by minute and the tiny 1970's style portable TV had poor reception (although not there to watch TV it is nice to have one that works properly especially when in the room getting ready), to even self classify this as a 4 star hotel is a cheek and it is expensive for what you get, in our opinion you would get a better quality room at Premier Inn or such like and breakfast would be just as nice. On a positive note the staff were friendly and helpfull and the breakfast was quite nice, unfortunately not nice enough to have us recommend or return in future..

My husband and I spent part of the bank holiday weekend here. We booked a 'superior' double room and judging by the photographs expected something special. On the good side the bed was comfy, the bedding and towels were fresh and the tea, coffee, biscuits etc were replenished on a daily basis. On the bad side the bathroom had a faint damp smell, which isn't surprizing as it was carpeted so hardly practical or hygienic, the shower temperature and power flucuated depending if any of the other rooms was using the water too and the shower head angle wasn't able to be adjusted - it only had one setting. Also the shower hose started to untwist whilst I was holding it so I had to re-tighten it every now and again. The bath wasn't full size either which came as a bit of a surprize. I'm only 5 foot three and I could only lean back upto my waist so I had no chance of having a relaxing soak, which was a bit of a shame as having a bath instead of just a shower in the bathroom was one of the main reasons why we choose this 'hotel'. The telly was a small portable on a high wall stand (so good luck viewing that from the bed!), had just the 5 channels with poor reception and no teletext. In this day and age I expect a room of this supposed quality to have a telly which at least had freeview and teletext as I like to check the local weather forecast etc. The only other bugbear is the fact that this is called a hotel when it is a bed and breakfast. At a hotel you would be able to contact various services by a telephone in the room and have someone at reception round the clock. Neither of these applies to Holmwood House. For the actual accommodation this 'hotel' was overpriced as it really is a 3 star and not a 4 star at all. Well not for our room anyway.

We stayed for two nights and found Holmwood House very convenient for all the sights we wanted to see and places we wanted to go. They were very helpful with directions and recommendations for restaurants, sights, etc. and helpful for figuring out the train times & tickets for our trip back to London. Very friendly staff. Rooms were very well done. Decor was nice and everything was comfortable. Great shower and bathroom. We had our two girls with us and they got the room across from us that had a door separating our two rooms from the rest of the hotel so we could prop our room doors open and go between rooms all in privacy from anyone else. Breakfast was traditional English, but was flexible and made to order.

There was no luxury in the luxury four poster bedroom
The museums bedding is in better condition
