“Very interesting”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

This is a very interesting spot, a windmill in a suburban area of York. It is in good working order and you can go inside and look around. The cost was £3 for adults and children are free, but children can't go inside on their own (even if the adult stands outside and watches), an adult has to pay and go in with the children.

“A touch of the country hits the city”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

A windmill should be out in the countryside, stood on wide green rolling hills. So what's this one doing perched on a roundabout in a york housing estate? It's a relic of a time when this was countryside, and York barely spread outside it's walls. Restored by a local group, it's a beautifully presented mill, from the painted exterior to the wooden cap and the 5 sails. Not working when I visited (somewhat lacking in the wind department!) but a lovely way to spend some time. Lots of local information on the mill and its environs, as well as local enthusiasts to fill you in on all the detail.

“A unique insight into York's past”
Reviewed June 16, 2012

The mill has been undergoing restoration for the last ten years, led by a team of local volunteers, The sails were recently added and will soon be working. Saw the first loaf to be baked with Holgate flour,as one pair of millstones can be worked by electric motor. Five flights of steep steps so not suitable for mobility restricted. Enthusiastic volunteers on each floor and lots of interpretation. Frequent daytime buses from York station no.1 to Acomb Road (New Lane) and a. short uphill walk.Only open alternate weekends so check with Tourist Info office first.
