“An interesting venue”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2014 via mobile

We visited this theatre to see a performance of Evita, which was, incidentally, very good. However, having visited many theatres from the West End to the Provinces this venue was, to say the least, different. It is obviously old but I am afraid it shows. Maybe I was unlucky, but my seat was anything but comfortable (although the view from the dress circle, was excellent)
The air conditioning could not cope with a warm but not hot day. The toilets and bar were depressing and the foyer unwelcoming. As other reviewers have mentioned, although I assume that the theatre meets all the statutory fire regulations, my wife's first comment on entering the auditorium was "how would we get out if there were a fire?"
Finally, the overall impression was of a drab theatre that was in need of some TLC

“Great venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2014

This is one of the most comfortable venues I have been to to see a show. Lots of leg room and great view of the stage. The only thing that stopped me giving it five starts was the lack of toilet facilities. The break was spent in a long queue instead of relaxing with a refreshment and everyone was complaining. Would recommend this venue, but just make sure you go to the loo before hand and don't drink when there!!

“20th century boy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

If you remember the 70's and in particular T.REX get along to see 20th Century Boy showing this week at The Grand Opera House York, a really great show, you will be dancing in the aisles and singing at the end.

“mortgage needed to buy wine!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2014

Went to see "tonight's the night" musical. Excellent show, really good voices from cast. Only downside was the heart stopping price of a glass of ordinary wine ... served in lipstick stained glasses- not good. Glasses were changed quickly but staff obviously found other stained glasses whilst checking for a clean one!
Shame it spoiled a great show experience.

“Modern echos of a bygone era...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014 via mobile

I have been to the Grand Opera House York on many occasions to see a variety of acts including live music, musical theatre, plays and even opera! The interior of the building has retained it's look of bygone days and creates a very special atmosphere!

Things are dated it's true but I love it non the less! And when the lights go down and the audience hushes... it is a wonderful place to be... :)
