Owner description: York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

A lovely theatre with a good bar attached in the foyer. The staff are lovely and very helpful. Right in the heart of York just around the corner from the minster. The de Grey rooms are beautiful and can be hired out .. also owned by the theatre...Lovely

My wife and i took our Grand daughter Maddy to see King Arthur and what a good decision it was, we were not disappointed. We loved it and more importantly sound did Maddy. They have really gone to town to make this an occasion this is so much more than a show. We started off with a lunch in their Cafe, good simple stuff well served up and not expensive, minstrels came out and were entertaining us as we ate, Maddy was then, during a visit to the Armoury, able to claim her Knighthood, dress up as Lady York and receive her certificate of office. She then was shown how to create her Coat Of Arms and her name was added to the Roll of Honour in the Corridors of the Theater. There then followed a tour of Camelot (the back stages of the theater. brilliantly set up) the visit included sight of the dragons lair (he was out) and the Lake. (the one with a Lady in it) there was even a sword cast into a stone which she was allowed to have a go (unsuccessfully) at pulling out. We were then called into the theater for the start of the show. This is not (thankfully) intended to be a pantomime but it was entertaining and enjoyable. The cast worked extremely hard and we came out feeling we had been royally entertained. A wonderful theater and a wonderful show.

We booked to see King Arthur. A great show which you could tell all who were involved enjoyed entertaining everyone. As soon as you walk through the door there was entertainment. Plenty for the kids to do especially in the garden. Everyone gets involved. A little show is put on while you are waiting to go in.
