Knowing we needed to be in York during school holidays we booked this hotel early and got a very good price which included breakfast. The hotel is near the racecourse a good mile and a half from the city centre. We knew this and it was of no concern to us. There are bus stops nearby and we enjoy walking. Our room looked like those of other Holiday Inns we have stayed in - it was clean, comfortable and, even though it overlooked reception, quiet. We both slept very well. Our arrival for breakfast coincided with a very busy period! The restaurant manager was fantastic - unflustered and clear, he found us a table very quickly and we enjoyed some good food, although we did have to wait for a short time while dishes were resupplied from the kitchens. It was not a problem and was well worth the money. In all, it was a very friendly hotel and very good value for the price we paid. I'll stay there again when we next go to York.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking, quiet room on a higher floor.

Good points:-
Friendly service throughout.
Spacious, quiet bedroom, with large windows and sofa. (Room 201)
Easy access to York centre by bus. £3.50 for a return ticket or £3.70 for a day ticket and you can use most of the buses. Plenty of free parking.

Bad Points:-
Tiny bathroom - we are both of slim build and found the bathroom cramped. Also would prefer a shower that you could detach from the wall.
There were some coffee stains by our kettle on arrival so we had to give it a wipe-down.
The bed was so uncomfortable and springy, we didn't get much sleep during our 3 night stay.
There was a smell of burnt toast every morning coming into our room (201).
No free wi-fi.
Breakfast was disappointing. The scrambled egg tasted weird; the pancake machine was a palaver each time as the bag kept needing to be replaced or there was an error message; they had run out of bananas at 9am on one of the days; the toasting machine didn't toast the bread or would burn it if you put it through twice.
Lastly, they asked for a room number at breakfast but did not check it off a list, to be honest, I'm sure if I gave them any number, or even turned up for an extra day, they wouldn't have been none the wiser.

This was our first stay in a Holiday Inn and we were expecting more for the price. Would I book again? Well I could put up with most of the above, but not the uncomfortable beds and lack of sleep, so no, I would choose somewhere else next time.

Dear SuzyBerkshire
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to complete the survey following your stay. Your feedback is very much appreciated and all of your comments will be discussed and actions taken to rectify your findings. I am sorry the mattress was not to your liking, all Holiday Inn hotels are supplied with a high quality branded mattress and these are frequently assessed to ensure maximum comfort, please be assured I will be inspecting the mattress in your room and this will be replaced if necessary.

Stayed during the week. Room was comfortable and clean, bathroom on the small side but OK. Staff very good and handled a temporary problem with room very well. It is a fair walk into the city centre - alright on a nice day, wouldn't fancy walking it in a storm. It is a trade off though, here there is free parking in a large car park with easy access to ring road and thus other attractions in Yorkshire against no/limited/expensive parking closer in to town. Lack of free wi-fi is only real negative.
Would stay again.

just come back from a lovely lovely stay at the hotel. booked for 2 nights, very warm friendly welcome, room comfortable, good ventilation, windows clean and opened, lovely clean rooms with replenished toiletries and tea/coffee. i have to echo the downsides. 3 people in a lift was more than full, wifi wasnt free which was annoying and the worse thing for us was the location. i didnt factor in taxi fares into town at £7 approx. each way. one of the party had a damaged ankle and the walk was just too far, and it was a sunday and buses werent very forthcoming. the distance to town was the biggest minus. the breakfasts were gorgeous and especially the pancake machine. theyre getting unlimited wifi in January, but would really be improved with a shuttle bus into town from the hotel a few times each day.

We stayed here on York marathon weekend as it was ideally placed for the shuttle service.

Very friendly staff, comfy bed, great breakfast.

Only downsides, and echo other comments, it's a long walk to the centre of York, no free wifi in the room and the lift is slow and tiny.

Even so, I would stay there again as I felt like a proper cared for customer.

I have used this hotel on a number of occasions for training events. It is one of my favourite venues - the rooms are well set up and the attentive service from Karol just makes it SO easy to run an event there. The restaurant staff are also brilliant. As a trainer it's important to have a venue where everything 'works' and this place just does that so well.

Delegates who have stayed here have commented very favourably on the rooms and breakfast/dinner - it's also ideally situated for easy access to the City of York and it's shops, restaurants etc.

The hotel had small lifts so that needed to wait for a quite big group from Asia like us with quite big luggages. It provided also no free wifi. The bathroom and the beds were small although a little bit bigger than Holiday Inn Edinburgh. It had a permanent shower that made it quite difficult for Asian tourists like us who always used water to wash after going to toilets instead of using paper tissues. The breakfast hours were also quite late (7 - 11 pm) for tourists like us who used to have breakfast early in the morning to effectively use the time. The breakfast was quite good. The hotel staff were fortunately quite friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Since the breakfast hours are quite late, go for breakfast as early as it opens to avoid queueing...
