We have just returned from a one night stay at the Greys Court Hotel and found the hotel and it's staff to be of the highest quality. The Hotel itself is beautiful and has a real historic feel to it. We stayed in the lovely Elizabeth Grey Suite, which was light and airy with a great view out onto the gardens and castle wall.

We would definately go back and can't recommend it enough to others!

We stayed her on the night of our wedding and the following night in the Cumberland Suite. It is a beautiful room with lovely antique furniture and a beautiful view. The bathroom was large with lovely fixtures and fittings. The breakfast was second to none. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had looked at a number of city centre hotels and the quality did not compare to the Grays Court.

I am hoping our anniversary treat will be a return visit. Fingers crossed.

We enjoyed our recent stay at Grays Court. We drove up from London, after an eight hour flight from Canada. Our GPS would not accept the address to Grays Court so we ended up parking the car near the Minster and walking until we found the inn. It is tucked away in a lovely courtyard down a very narrow cobblestone lane behind the Minster. No one was at the reception desk when we arrived, but with a little nosing around we were able to find someone to check us in. While registering, we tried to explain where we had left the car. The owner of the inn ended up walking back to the car with us so that she could guide us into their property. This was very helpful!

The Court is perfectly located close to restaurants, shopping and sights. The Shambles is a short walk away.

Grays Court was not what I expected. The description we read when looking online said that the inn is luxurious. I was expecting your typical 4 star lobby, reception desk, lounge area and dining room version of luxurious. Rather than this, Grays Court is very informal and comfortable. My husband was quick to remind me that we were in a building that is about 800 years old and that it was my expectations that were questionable, not the inn. The lobby is quite dark, with lovely old wood and stone. There are several cozy lounging areas, one right in the lobby. One can sit and have a glass of wine in that lounge, or take their wine and wander to one of the little nooks in another part of the building. We were there for two nights and on both nights wandered into the lounge for some friendly conversation with other guests and the staff. It was an excellent way to end each evening.

We stayed in the “Williams” room and we loved it. The bed in this room is only a double, giving us slightly less sleeping room than we are used to, but it was fine.

If you believe in ghosts, Grays Court is full of possibilities! Perhaps the age of the building lends itself to this atmosphere… On our first night there, I awakened around 1:00 a.m. While tossing a bit, I suddenly heard a long wailing sound which got my heart racing. When it stopped, I was tempted to wake my husband, but I wasn’t even sure that it hadn’t been my imagination. Suddenly, I heard it again, and a third time. By then my husband was awake, probably from me moving around, but he was too late to hear the sound. I asked the owner if anyone else had reported ghostly experiences and she said that none had been reported.

We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast in the dining room both mornings of our stay. On the first morning, I had scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. The salmon was made into a “cup” which held the perfectly scrambled eggs. It was delicious! My husband had pancakes which he said were exceptional. The second day we both had traditional English breakfast with fried egg, tomato, bacon, black pudding and toast. On the side board in the dining room, juices, yogurt and fruit were there for the choosing.

We had a wonderful stay in the lovely city of York. I would not hesitate to recommend Grays Court to anyone. I know we will be back!

I had been really looking forward to staying at Grays Court having spoken to a charming lady when I booked. The lady in question had waxed lyrical about a particularly nice rose she was in the process of ordering and promised we would get the opportunity to try it on our arrival before heading out to dinner later.
On arrival no one was around and we ended up waiting for around 5 minutes before anyone showed up at reception. Finally taken to room, Williams, which was pleasant but not luxurious.
Unpacked quickly in eagerness to relax in bar and enjoy pre dinner drinks. Again no one was around - lady sat behind reception desk ignored us. Waited without attention for probably 10 minutes then finally went to ask for assistance explaining how much we were looking forward to trying the wine. After waiting a further 10 minutes we were told they had run out. Gave up and walked into town.
Returned to find bar full with what seemed to be one large group so decided not to barge in and went to bed.
After little sleep went down to breakfast. Asked whether wanted brown or white toast - asked for white - got brown. Wasn't asked what sort of eggs so assumed no choice then presented with one breakfast featuring scrambled eggs and one fried.
Decided it was important to let the hosts know how poor the service had been and give them a chance to provide some sort of explanation or apology - on check out they didn't even ask if we had enjoyed our stay and had to check whether the room had been single or double occupancy - final straw - exemplified how little attention they had given us. Bill was £172 for one night in a small room and a dreadful breakfast.
We have stayed in some of the most wonderful hotels in the country - this isn't one of them.
Perfect location ruined by amateurs.

We have held two events at Grays Court in 2012, both of which have been a great success. This was due not only to the fabulous setting but also the management & staff who are extremely organised, helpful & friendly. Both the owner & events coordinator played a major role in ensuring all went smoothly both prior & during the evenings. All our individual last minute requirements were dealt with a 'can do' attitude & made the events a joy to organise. The property is unique & in my opinion adds a real kudos to any function. I would highly recommend this venue. Our guests waxed lyrical, and still do, about the fantastic evening they had.

We had an enjoyable stay at Grays Court. The house is very old and interesting with lots of history. All staff members we encountered were friendly and the location is an ideal base for visiting York whilst being very quiet (almost too quiet!) in the evening as it’s situated on a quiet lane behind the minster.

You do pay a premium for the location and the history of the house. The facilities are probably slightly below what most would expect at the price although the rooms are nicely presented and cleanliness is good. Breakfast was very well presented but of average standard. No continental breakfast was on offer but there were plenty of cooked options to order, cereals and juices.

We got the impression this would make a very good wedding venue if you booked the whole place but as a B&B guest at times you do feel you’re intruding just a little on the family’s other activities (a evening restaurant and busy daytime tea rooms). Quite often nobody is to be found at reception.

Grays Court is very good if you’re taking a car. Some complain at the cost of the parking here however York is not very car friendly so this price isn’t bad in real terms although it would be courteous to waive the fee for paying guests. It’s a good place to leave a high value car if you’re worried about on-street parking or public car parks.

Would we stay again? Yes, if taking a car. Otherwise would certainly consider it but would also look at the competition more closely given the price.

We fell in love with Grays Court when we saw it and knew it would be our perfect wedding venue. It was great to have the whole day in one stunning venue and not have to move the guests around. We had a few 'issues' with the previous wedding coordinator in early 2011, but after Katharine took over in Spring 2011, everything ran very smoothly. This continued on the big day, which ran like clockwork. This gave us the confidence to relax and enjoy our big day. The staff were attentive, polite and very professional. The catering throughout the day was superb; all the guests commented on the quality of the food. It was delicious! The hotel rooms were also excellent, and a beautiful, romantic place to spend our first night as a married couple. All in all, we were so pleased we chose Grays Court as we will have good memories of the day for the rest of our lives - thanks guys!
