“Goddards Garded - and house!”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

We went on the rare occasion when this lovely Arts and Crafts house was open as well as the garden and it was a great experience. The gardens are beautiful, full of hidden bits and twists and turns, as well as lovely sunny lawns. THe house was a bit surreal, as it is currently being used as offices by the National Trust, but its soon to become a tourist attraction of some kind.

“a little oasis of calm in York”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

I really echo the review from ExCymru - you need to look out for the entrance - if you are travelling towards York city centre, it is on the right just past Holiday Inn and the church.

The gardens are owned and managed by the National Trust - the house is not open to the public, but makes a beautiful backdrop. We were given a leaflet to explain a little of the background and there are some reference folders available with some history about the Terry family. It did not take us long to stroll round the formal and informal gardens. The fragrant lavender border is wonderful and I particularly liked the little pathways round the ponds. There are benches and picnic tables, so it would be an ideal spot for a picnic. There are no refreshments to purchase on site.

We were already in the area, making this a pleasant part of our day out. I don't know if I would have made a special trip just to see this. I would recommend tagging it on to other National Trust properties if you are a member - such as the Treasurer's House.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed June 24, 2011

This is a small National Trust garden. As it does not have large visitor numbers it is not signposted with the usual brown visitor attraction signs. If you are a member of the National trust the directions are in your annual handbook. You are told to - follow York outer ring road (A1237/A64), turn onto A1036 Tadcaster Road, signed to York city centre, then turn right after St.Edwards's Church, through brick gatehouse arch. Do NOT put the postcode into your SatNav, which is what we did, as it takes you into a cul de sac parallel to where you want to be!
Having said that it is an attractive garden and in keeping with the Arts & Crafts style house which it surrounds. The garden is not very large, compared to some properties, and has only been open to the public on a regular basis since 2006. We were given a leaflet on the history of the garden and a leaflet particular to what's going on and flowering in the garden in June.
Different parts of the garden are enclosed by Yew hedges. There was a lovely area with herbaceous perennial borders. The gardener and volunteers we met were very helpful and informative. There are plants for sale from the garden.
