“Jolly nice stay and only a short walk away”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

Very nice decor, lovely breakfast and pleasant people - we would definitely stay here again.
The walled city is only 5-10 min walk away (depending whether you stride or stroll) meaning the B&B is nice and quiet.
It seems hotels with fewer reviews are higher in the ranking but I would recommend this one for a very pleasant stay.

Two families drived to York and stayed at the Carlton on Aug 6 & 7. Family rooms are extremely spacious and clean ( Rm 1 & 6 ). Breakfast is huge and delicious, with very nice and welcoming staff. ( Susan always wears beautiful smiles !! Very patient to listen to young kids' choice of food ). However, the hostess, Melanie, we met seemed a bit cool and distant, but anyway answer all my questions.

Good walking distance to city centre. However, both rooms have difficulties to connect to internet.

A lovely looking building but it sits on a main road and a bus route - very convenient but be warned that it will be noisy if your room is at the front. There is double glazing, which is fine in winter, but no help in summer with open windows. The family room we stayed in was adequate and functional - with en suite facilities. Perfectly possible to walk into York from here and restaurants close by. No frills and fairly unimaginative decor etc. but relatively cheap so the old addage applies - you get what you pay for.

This was our 2nd visit and again it was very clean. The rooms were tastefully decorated with well stocked welcome trays and a very comfortable bed.
Breakfast was served by ladies who were eager to please and were polite and friendly.
There was a good choice of cooked food and cereals and fruit and this was always served without a wait even when the place was busy, this was due to plenty of staff on duty.
The Carlton is in a good position easy to find by car and within walking distance of the station. It was a pleasant walk in the evening down to the city centre to find so much choice in restaurants and Mark the owner would give recommendations and maps if you were looking for any thing in particular.
We would certainly visit again!

Just returned from a 2 night stay at Carlton House, from arrival to departure our stay was so friendly, comfortable, relaxing and chilled. The room was spotlessly clean, comfortable and had everything we needed during our stay, flat screen tv, free in room wifi, complimentary bottled water, magazines and toiletries. The Yorkshire breakfasts were as good as you get, freshly cooked to order with quality produce used.
The Guesthouse is 5 mins away from the old wall, just far enough to stroll in and away from the noise, hustle and bustle. Our room at the rear looked over some lovely terrace gardens and the free car park, which incidentally is a godsend in this busy city (the council know how to charge here at £12 a day). Parking here is adequate with 9 spaces for 13 rooms and may i say very well managed, we arrived quite latish on and blocked other guests vehicles in, Mark the owner asked us to leave him our car keys with him so he could park us out of the way the next day as we werent using our car, this system seemed to work favourably.
There are some fantastic restaurants in York, we had the best lamb tikka massala ever at the local Indial 200m down called Chilli and on our 2nd night we ate at Indochine (a mixture of Thai, Chinese, Korean and Japanese) which again was very reasonable and fantastic food, 2 good reccomendations from the proprietors at Carlton House.
The real ale pub just through the wall on the left was chilled and had a great choice of wonderfull local ales, try the York Guzzler and Great Heck brews. The ghost walk was hilarious as was the haunted house, we also had a scrummy lunch at Plonkers wine Bar which have seats that overlook the river.
All in all our stay was very enjoyable, we will come again and reccomend Carlton House, Chilli and Indochine to friends.......
