“August 2012 (tripadvisor insists I cannot select this date, so put it as August 2013”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

A bit late, but only just found tripadvisor site. We were only able to have a few days away as have to look after an 'AP' as Dickens said. We found the Carlton on the 'Visit York' website and were glad we did.

Whilst on route from the South of England, owner contacted us to ensure he would be available to welcome us - a nice touch. We manoeuvred into the free parking at rear and were duly registered. We had a room on the top floor and so a lot of stairs to climb (70+) so don't leave anything you need in your car unless you want a good workout! Room at front so nice views over rooftops and traffic noise from a busy road was surprisingly low.

Mark was holding the fort as his wife was having a few days off, but nothing was too much trouble for him. The staff work well as a team and breakfasts were brilliant!

It is but a short walk from the City Centre with all that has to offer and an excellent base to explore the area from. One day we went out to Whitby via the North Yorkshire Moors (NYMR)preserved railway from Pickering (not a long drive). Two days exploring York (could have done with more).

Plenty of restaurants within walking distance for your evening meal (try the Italian just down the hill).

If still available and you are there for 3 days, get a York Pass - it saves you a lot (and in 2012, free return trip on the NYMR).

As far as Carlton House goes, a description that Mark (as a good Yorkshireman, often uses)

Had a lovely 2 night stay at Carlton house. Mark , Melanie and staff were very welcoming and made us feel at home. Our room was extremely comfortable, warm and spacious, overlooking the main street but despite this was really quiet. Lovely ensuite shower room with beautiful fresh white towels and the finishing touches in the room added to our comfort. Breakfast was delicious and tasty with all fresh Yorkshire produce cooked to your liking. York was great with loads to see and do. We bought a 2 day York pass which allowed us use of over 30 attractions. The York dungeons is a must. There is so much history and character in York and would definitely suit all ages. We ate at 2 lovely restaurants, the whippett inn and the old Siam, both were outstanding for food, atmosphere and service. Mark and Melanie we would be happy to stay with you again and I will definitely recommend your lovely place to family and friends.

We stayed 2 nights at the carlton house sat 7th & sun 8th December. We had room 12 on the 2nd floor which is at the back of the hotel so it was really quiet, it was a lovely room, nice and warm with a big bathroom. Breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked so you could order what you wanted from the menu and it kept us going all day, the staff who served the breakfasts were very polite and friendly. On arrival we were given a map of York and were told how to get into the city centre with some recommendations of places to eat. It is a good 10min walk into the centre but this was not a problem for us, maybe if you are less mobile it might be a bit far, but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel. Overall a good place to stay and I will be recommending The Carlton House to friends and family.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Carlton House, York. Very easy to find and free parking to the rear of the property. Smashing friendly welcome with map provided, directions and advise re eating places etc. Allocated room no 8 on second floor. Beautifully and tastefully furnished and immaculately clean. Bed was EXTREMELY comfortable with top quality linen and slept like a log both nights. Lovely toiletries and thoughtful extras like cotton buds, bottled water etc. Ideally situated a short stroll from the city centre which was just amazing at Christmas-time. First visit at Christmas and already planning to return next year. Breakfast was gorgeous with cold and hot buffet, cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. Great selection, beautifully cooked. Bacon in particular was outstanding. No downsides at all to this smashing find. Will definitely be returning in the future. Well deserved top class B & B.

Only stayed for two nights but thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was excellent, well decorated and spotlessly clean. Very good choice at breakfast and the food was very tasty. There was also the bonus of a car park which is quite small but seems to work well. The Guest House is situated a comfortable walk from the city centre which makes it ideal for us. Hope to return for our next trip to York. June and Stephen.

We visited York with another couple and booked two rooms at The Carlton. We were given a warm welcome by Mark , who also offered advice on some of the best local hostelries (much appreciated by the husbands). Our rooms were spacious and elegantly decorated and had smart bathrooms with good showers. Breakfast was fresh and delicious and the staff were very friendly. The Carlton is in a good location, only a 15 minute walk into York and had a small car park.
We visit York every Christmas and will most certainly be returning to the Carlton next year.
