A bit late, but only just found tripadvisor site. We were only able to have a few days away as have to look after an 'AP' as Dickens said. We found the Carlton on the 'Visit York' website and were glad we did.
Whilst on route from the South of England, owner contacted us to ensure he would be available to welcome us - a nice touch. We manoeuvred into the free parking at rear and were duly registered. We had a room on the top floor and so a lot of stairs to climb (70+) so don't leave anything you need in your car unless you want a good workout! Room at front so nice views over rooftops and traffic noise from a busy road was surprisingly low.
Mark was holding the fort as his wife was having a few days off, but nothing was too much trouble for him. The staff work well as a team and breakfasts were brilliant!
It is but a short walk from the City Centre with all that has to offer and an excellent base to explore the area from. One day we went out to Whitby via the North Yorkshire Moors (NYMR)preserved railway from Pickering (not a long drive). Two days exploring York (could have done with more).
Plenty of restaurants within walking distance for your evening meal (try the Italian just down the hill).
If still available and you are there for 3 days, get a York Pass - it saves you a lot (and in 2012, free return trip on the NYMR).
As far as Carlton House goes, a description that Mark (as a good Yorkshireman, often uses)
