“Comfortable stay in cosy hotel”
Reviewed December 8, 2013 via mobile

This was a very nice hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. It deserves it's good reputation. The room (4) was cosy and quiet, and the housekeeping was very good. Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of options all freshly prepared to order. The hotel is only a short walk from the station (5 mins) and about 10 to 15 minutes gentle stroll to the town centre. I will definitely stay here again when next in York. Be aware there are a lot of stairs around the quirky layout, which is two grand Victorian Villas put together, and the adds to the charm of the well decorated and maintained interior.

Thank you for your comments and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. As mentioned, all our food is freshly prepared using locally sourced produce where available and we are very proud of the many awards we have received. The hotel is full of character and charm giving a country house feel but minutes from the city centre. We look forward to welcoming youback

I do not agree at all with the last two reviews that have been left for this hotel, there is just no pleasing some people.

I stayed here for one night as a emergency stop during the bad weather as I could not get home.
They had kept the room open for me for most of the day as my husband had booked it earlier knowing I could not get home.
I arrived very late and was greeted by a lovely man who was at reception he took my case through to my room and even enquired about something to eat for me. I was then greeted by another very pleasant gentleman who arranged food and a very welcome drink in the lounge bar, the food was presented very nicely and was just what I needed, nothing was to much trouble.

My room was a Garden room and what a lovely suprise that greeted me on turning the key, outside the room had an array of plants that was very pleasing and different which I thought added a nice touch. The room was spacious warm and had more than would be expected , it was very clean nicely furnished and cosy I could not fault it at all, the furniture is not dated at all in fits in nicely with the surroundings which is what it is supposed to do. I had a good nights sleep in a huge bed, and breakfast the following morning was 5 * quick service very friendly and efficient and a very good menu choice which was cooked beautifully.

I cannot fault this hotel it was a life saver and I would have liked to have stayed longer, I would definetly recomend this hotel if asked.
And by the way It is not overpriced at all worth every penny. And thank you.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are delightfull.

Many thanks for your wonderful comments regarding your recent stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you embraced the charm and character of such an old building and that our genuine customer care was received. We stayed here a couple of weeks back for our wedding anniversary, and hoped the price tag and traditional building, would make for a special trip. The hotel is well situated, and the old part is lovely - full of character and very homely. The staff are excellent, and very friendly (one night a member of staff was entertaining a child from a wedding during speeches to prevent him from disturbing them, which I doubt you would get in many other places).Unfortunately, we stayed in a garden suite, which was disappointing. Very clean, and big (largest and comfiest hotel bed we have had) but it was dated and what we had hoped the price would have warranted, just wasn't there. It was vaguely reminiscent of a lean-to, and the corridor you have to walk along, was very cold. The bathroom was a tad dated, but the room did have some nice touches, such as the cafetiere and coffee.
The breakfast was outstanding, and took the edge off our disappointment a little.
All in all, the £225 we paid was too much for the room - for that price you expect luxury, and we have stayed in many hotels at that price tag which are several levels up from this.
The old part may well be different, but if you book this hotel, ask for another room rather than the garden suite.

Room Tip: Avoid the garden suite in winter

Thank you for your feed back with regards to your recent stay with us and we do take on board your constructive comments. All the staff aim to provide a personal yet professional service and shall always go out of their way to help our guests have an enjoyable and relaxing visit. The hotel is very old, the main part dating back to the 1830's, and therefore maintenance and improvement works are always on going, which I am sure you can appreciated, but the wing where the Garden Suites are situated is a purpose built building of solid construction. All the rooms in the main part of the building are very different with each having there own character, and a request for one of these shall always be granted if available.

Just had a weekend stay in a garden suite room. Clean & comfortable however decor & furnishings very dated. Staff extremely friendly & helpful and breakfast lovely. We also found the jungle in the corridor rather odd !!! All in all a nice Hotel although for the price would expect more up to date decor and a radiator for heating rather than a very noisy fan heater.

Our first visit to this excellent accommodation, but it will definitely not be our last! We were met with a very friendly and helpful reception and showed to our spacious and beautifully furnished room. We dined at Oxo's and were bowled over by the very tasty and attractively presented dishes, so much so that we ate there again the second night. The breakfasts were brilliant as has already been reported. We walked easily into the city, which is full of good things to do. We felt thoroughly pampered throughout our stay. A slightly strange choice of background music in the restaurant the first night could not detract from a thoroughly excellent overall experience. Thank you all at Mount Royale.

I have been visiting the Mount Royale for many years for either business or short breaks with my partner and firmly believe it is one of the hidden jewels of Yorkshire. It is very well placed in relation to strolling into the centre of York, for the wonderful racecourse and for exploring the surrounding area.

The hotel itself is a very charming building and the rooms are very characterful and elegant, very clean, tastefully decorated and well appointed. The staff are truly exceptional as apart from being very helpful and friendly they really will go the "extra mile" to ensure that your stay in the hotel and in York is the very best it can be.

The restaurant is particularly worth visiting and I have enjoyed many fantastic meals and pored over the excellent wine list. And as for the breakfasts available...... OMG! You're in for a real treat regarding the variety offered and the excellent service that is provided. My favourite has got to be the Full English....with beans! The perfect start for exploring York.

The bar is cosy and toasty with a fantastic range of drinks available and again the staff have an enormous wealth of experience and are always willing to share a good story with you.

I truly would recommend visiting the Mount Royale if you can.

My family have owned and run the hotel for the last 47 years, and at times it has been difficult on both a personal and professional basis, but the most generous and kind comments you have taken the time to write, (along with other many loyal guests), about your many visits to the Mount Royale both for business and pleasure certainly help to make our hard work worth while, so thank you. Our staff, many of which are long serving, all aim to provide a personal yet professional service and take pride in their work. And as for the food, we do like to feed our guests, and all with freshly prepared local produce, for which we have won awards. We look forward to welcoming you back and thank you for your continued custom

This was our third visit to the hotel and everything was just as good as on previous stays. The owner and staff are so friendly and helpful, the breakfasts are the best you can find, and dinner was equally enjoyable. We were upgraded on arrival to a wonderfully spacious room. If you plan to visit York, you would be hard pressed to find a more comfortable and ideally located hotel with ample parking.

Room Tip: All rooms are to an extremely high standard. Room 20 was wonderful.
