“A delightful discovery”

This hotel is full of surprises, from the lovely traditional ambience and furnishings, the professional, friendly and attentive staff, the gorgeous garden, pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna, the delicious restaurant, and the beauty salon. It is near the centre of York, and the racecourse, and a lovely place to stay. Perfect!

Room Tip: Possibly better to ask for a room not on the road side, as it can be a bit noisy for an insomniac li...

We are a very old and unique hotel with the main part of the building dating back to the 1830's and has been described as a tardis of individual rooms with a wealth of character and history. Our aim, and that of all the staff, is to provide a professional yet personal service with customer care and satisfaction being our main priority, and so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you back

Staying at the Mount Royale is more an a hotel stay, it's a hospitality masterclass. From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave you are made to feel not like a guest, but like a visiting friend. Nothing is too much for the staff, their pleasant, warm personas fill the atmosphere from the second you walk through the doors.
I was lucky enough to stay in one of the garden suite rooms. I say 'room' but this could almost be described as a self contained apartment. The room itself is huge with a large bed, chairs for relaxing watching the TV and DVD (the hotel has a library of DVDs for you to choose from) and enough storage to keep even the heaviest traveller's belongings out of sight and tidy. A separate walk in changing room with hanging space, iron and board, safe, drinks fridge and hot drinks bar (tea - selection, coffee - both instant and caffetiere, hot chocolate and biscuits) give additional storage and the bathroom houses a bath (big enough for a 6 footer to easily soak) with shower over, large sink, and toilet.
But the piéce de resistance of the garden room must be the garden access. A large glass door opens onto a private, sheltered veranda with chairs and a table which leads into the gardens which are superb for an evening 'wander' to wind down before bed.
The gardens also house the pool, sauna and hot tub (all included in the price).
I had read reviews on TripAdvisor before I booked and knew it would be something special. But even these high expectations were exceeded beyond possibility.
TripAdvisor reviews also said to try the eggs Benedict and with good reason - if you've never tried it, this is the best place to try it to see how it should be done. If you have, this will show you what you should be expecting from now on. Simply superb.
I've stayed at many hotels, but this is the best I've ever stayed in and is a real credit to the owners.

Well what can I say apart from many thanks for your wonderful comments about your recent stay with us and so pleased we lived up to, and exceeded your expectations. We are a small family owned hotel where customer care and satisfaction is the priority of the owners and all staff, and our aim is to provide a personal but professional service. The four Garden Suites are delightful with direct access to the Old English country garden, but the remaining twenty rooms in the main building are also very charming, each with its own individual style and character. We hope you remain a visitor to the hotel, arriving as a guest but departing as a Mount Royale friend

I visited this hotel with two friends or a spa day and was not expecting a great deal for the price. Boy what a surprise! An unimposing facade leads into a gorgeous period property full of charm. We were warmly greeted and nothing was too much trouble. The gardens are beautiful, with a small pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub nestled away. Lunch was good quality home cooked food, very tasty with excellent service. Lots of choice. Excellent service. I am booking to go back again.

Pleased to hear that you received a pleasant surprise and that you and your friends had a most enjoyable spa day. The hotel and gardens have been described as having the tardis effect, having a country house feel, but yet conveniently placed for access to the city centre.
Your comments shall be relayed to all concerned and hope that on your next visit you may also incorporate a nights stay

Quirky hotel with everything you could want from the lovely, comfortable beds, clean and individual rooms to the bonus of the pool, hot-tub and sauna in the magic gardens. Fantastic hotel to stay in when visiting York or reason enough to make a visit even if just for the gorgeous breakfasts (Eggs Benedict and Hash Browns, bliss!) and the extra treat of having the outstanding Burbridges Restaurant within the hotel. Highly recommended and we shall return.

With so many choices of accommodation in such a beautiful city of York. we are delighted you came to stay with us. The hotel building dates back to the 1830's so is, as you mentioned, a little quirky but also very individual where the owners and staff aim to provide a personal yet professional service. We are proud to use and promote locally sourced produce in both our breakfast and restaurant menus, and use fresh and seasonal ingredients to create tempting dishes for all tastes and dietary requirements. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not so distant future.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. The accommodation was outstanding, the staff friendly and the breakfast amazing and very large!!!!!!. The dinner, we were on a half-board basis was excellent., You have to pay a supplement for some of the dishes but it was worth every penny. The menu would not suit everyone though especially if you have children or young adults but I am sure they would go out of there way to help with this. The hotel grounds were surprising with lots of nooks and crannies and winding paths totally unexpected. The hotel was oldy worldy. It was about 182 years old so had alot of character.
The hotel was very clean and I will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends and family and to all the people using trip advisor. I cannot understand why it does not have a four star rating.

Room Tip: We had a family suite as we were on a Luxi break, it was my birthday. It was suitated at the back of...

Many thanks for your wonderful comments they are very much appreciated. The hotel is very old and a 'tardis' of individual character, the gardens proving a great surprise to many with always a quiet corner to sit and relax in. We have received a breakfast award for many years, for which we are very proud, and so pleased we continue to satisfy the early morning taste buds !
The restaurant menu is continually being monitored and adjusted to guests feed back, so your comments have been noted, but we would, as you also mentioned, do what we could to produce an evening meal for individual dietary needs or requirements if requested.

Recently stayed at Mount Royale for a one night stay in a garden suite. This hotel is fab. Traditional style features its warm and homely. The grounds are fantastic and you almost forget your minutes from a city. We were lucky to have fantastic weather so the outside pool and hot tub were an extra bonus. Breakfast in the morning was delicious with plenty choices. Im use to staying in modern design hotels but it made such a change staying in such a cosy traditional setting where service matters and everyone has a smile. It is a very short walk to micklegate and the centre of York being on 5- 10 minutes away down a straight road.would def stay here again on any future visits to York. Thank you for a lovely stay

We've just enjoyed 2 nights in a hotel that makes you feel loved! That may sound strange but the overall experience is one of being cossetted by the staff who go out of their way to help and advise you. The breakfast is 'to die for' with it's variety and freshness and of course they use locally sourced products and are proud of it!
We were in room 15 with it's four poster bed which was very comfortable and despite being at the front of the hotel we weren't unduly bothered by road noise. One little niggle is the over bath shower which couldn't/ wouldn't maintain a steady and constant heat and flow - not very endearing!
We enjoyed a beautiful if expensive meal in Burbidges restaurant which is in the hotel and offers 'fine dining' and very high service levels from friendly and welcoming staff.
Overall we had a great 2 days and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room with a decent shower.
