My family and I have visited St. Crux's the past few years and plan to return on every future visit to York. Once a small church, the interior has been converted into an area with tables, chairs and a serving area. It's a perfect - and extremely inexpensive - place to get a cup of tea and light snack. Making this all the better, however, is that all of the proceeds - both from internal food/drink sales as well as outside rummage/flea market sales - benefit the charity that is hosting that day! Talk about a 'win-win' situation! You may find some books you've been searching for, a children's game, or a jar of your favorite jam or chutney. Each day is a new experience! Kudos to the person who had the idea to use this site in this marvelous way!

For overseas visitors: "gawp" just means to look at, a little amazed. Not wishing to be patronising or anything but it seems the right word and I have no idea whether it is used outside these islands.

Anyway, I was really hoping to write about this place within a category that covered places to go for a quick and cheap cup of tea but I can't see how to add it alongside the like of Betty's and Starbucks which are themselves treated as "cheap eat" restaurants - not where I would have looked really,

So basically you are ready for a cup of tea and you've walked to the end of the Shambles furthest from the Minster. This place is right in front of you. Go in (if it is open).

I didn't realise until reading the earlier review that different charities run this each day (brilliant idea by the way) so the experience may not be consistent. We found (on a Thursday) that tea, cakes and scones were good - and really too cheap (2 teas and 2 scones totalled £1.80). Ladies, you can put your prices up, at least for us tourists! The sandwiches were not so good, quality- or price-wise but you could tell by looking. We also bought a load of very cheap books.

What more could you ask for? Well, look at the photos. The walls are lined with memorials - referring to people buried "near" here, so I don't think your spilt tea is going to seep into any actual graves. See if you can get the table by the really spectacular one.

Ladies, did I mention you are not charging enough?

St. Crux is a fantastic charity venture. Every day, a different charity or church uses it's facilities to fund raise. Because of this, there is no guarantee what it will be like on the day. Expect sandwiches and home-made cakes (but nothing too fancy!) A great place to eat if you want a quick bite!
