“Ride through the past”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

My partner had been through the Jorvik Viking Centre shortly after it first opened and was excited to return. His enduring memory was of the smells and was disappointed that they were not as intense as he recalled. Great for kids - a school group was there at the same time and they sure were enjoying the ride. Great for families.

Well thought out and interesting historically, just one thing ... those smells are not the best. I know it is supposed to make it more authentic ... but ...

Changed a bit since my last visit many moons ago. My children were both supposed to have visited with their school but the trips were cancelled.
They loved it! Especially the ride. We bought the joint ticket with The Dig and I thought it was pretty good value.
Very educational and relevant to the age group (ages 7,8,10 and 11)

“Good day to go”
Reviewed January 5, 2014

As local residents we are always aware of the fairly constant queue for Jorvik. We thought therefore we would try to avoid that when visiting with our grandchildren, by booking a timed slot online. No such luck though because we couldn't book online and use our Tesco Days Out vouchers. Hum - next trick was to go New Year's Day and hope it wouldn't be too busy. First surprise was to find the Park and Ride closed, disaster given the cost of parking in York these days. But no, our luck in, because there was so little open in York on New Year's Day that we easily found a free space near the Early Music Centre, so only a short walk up Walmgate to Jorvik. And NO QUEUE! My grandson is a good marker as to the attention grabbing value of any attraction because not known for his attention span. However, despite his eagerness to get on the ride he was engaged by the Viking interpreter who involved us all in looking at the Viking house layout under the floor and the artifacts around it. They both enjoyed the ride, the 10 year old using the adult commentary and the 9 year old the children's one - only problem there being the speakers rather high for her to hear well. I hadn't been since the early days of Jorvik and was impressed by the marvellously lifelike figures. The children enjoyed the opportunity to converse with other costumed interpreters who were skilful at engaging them. Because of our Tesco vouchers the cost for the four of us was £7 which was fantastic value - had we paid £27.50 I think I would have thought that was rather a lot - though very worthwhile. In filling in his visitors' questionnaire my grandson's only criticism was that there was nowhere to have a drink and a sit down during the visit!
