has to be the worst place ever i have stayed! no heating in the room, window has a massive gap in it. no temperature gauge on shower only one temp scalding. no telephone, no extra blankets availabe. staff unable to give directions to hotel, was served breakfast in a very draughty room, £20 to park in a car park around the corner. very helpful young lady on front desk trying her best shame about the management. could go on forever but won't, just save your money and stay else where!! has seriously made my trip very disappointing, never again, booked this trip for my friend as a treat for all her help and what a waste of a time, plus had cobwebs in room!!!

The hotel is situated in a good position. However, the gardens leading to the town centre close their gates at 6.00 and the alternative route is not as pleasant.

We received a friendly greeting on arrival and were led up a bare, nail ridden, staircase, through a chilly corridor to our room. The room was small but well furnished with a large bed. Sadly, the only heating was by a small blower heater which was far from satisfactory at this time of year. The tv stations worked only intermittently. The bathroom had a flashy shower unit and a spa bath. On the first morning the shower cut out and left me with a head full of shampoo and on the second the water was cold.

The breakfast menu was short. The cornflakes were stale and on both mornings the poor quality coffee was cold. The waitress refused to allow the slightest amendment to the breakfast menu and was not very friendly.

On the second day our room key card did not work and we had to return to reception for another. No apology was forthcoming.

The staff varied from charming to very off hand. With a few tweeks and a word or two in the right place staff wise, this could be quite a good hotel. However, we will not be going back to check.

I booked a package with Thomas Cook which gave us 2 nights hotel and train from Scotland. After checking reviews on Trip Adviser I was a bit worried about going to the Jorvik Hotel. However the staff were most helpful and we had a lovely room with jaccuzzi bath and recently renovated room and bathroom. The public areas were not so good but I expect they will be last to be renovated. The breakfast was a bit sparse, if you asked for black pudding you only got half! The location was excellent, a walk through a lovely park and you were right in the centre of town. It was only minutes from the river so you could also walk into town that way.

I stayed at the Jorvik with my wife and two friends on Fri and Sat (25 and 26 Sept 09). Our room was on the small side for a double but was acceptable. Unfortunately there were four problems that were reported to the duty staff, we couldn't get the plug out of the bath, the shower refused to give out any water, the water ran cold Saturday teatime, the TV remote failed to work. I reported the faults to the staff who sorted things out. Our friends were put into a room that looked like it was in the middle of being refurbished, they too had problems with their shower, but they couldn't control the temperature (it was boiling hot or nothing). Their room looked out to the front and didn't have any net curtains to restrict the view from the pavement therefore the curtains had to be kept closed. They didn't have any wardrobes, they had a clothes pole instead. And to top it off when we got back on Saturday evening they found that the room hadn't been serviced.

The hotel was full over the weekend and as a result the small dining area couldn't cope.

The management need to know that the staff are extremely professional, helpful and efficient. The hotel unfortunately does not do the staff justice.

If you are considering this accommodation in York, think again.

We fancied an afternoon/evening out in York and so needed a room for 1 night on a Saturday. Most hotels wouldn't allow us to book for one night only unless we left it to the last minute so the Jorvik was actually the only hotel I could book 1 week in advance. After having booked, I read the reviews so wasn't feeling too confident as we arrived. The first member of staff we met was doing something with a ladder at the front of the building but was very friendly and helpful directing us around the corner to the ncp car park as their own small one was already full (parking costs around £10 per day). The reception and bar area seemed to be very sparcely furnished and "not quite finished". When we were shown to our room we walked through a large, completely empty room with a badly stained carpet which seemed very strange. Our room (8) had obviously just been refurbished and was very nice and clean with a huge comfy bed, pristine white duvet and sheets and a small jacuzzi bath/ hi-tec shower. We went off out for a lovely afternoon and evening, returning at bedtime to a friendly greeting from the all night receptionist. We hadn't been asleep long when an extremely loud noise from a water pipe woke us up!! The noise went on for about 5 minutes accompanied by the sound of the staff frantically running around trying to put a stop to it - quite comical really!!
Breakfast was fine (the usual full english) served in a large dining room furnished with folding wooden chairs, an odd assortment of tables and not much else. The staff were lovely though, very eager to please and obviously working on both the service and rennovation side of the business.
Reading between the lines it would seem that the previous owners rans out of money in the middle of the refurb and the current owners aren't in a position to finish it as quickly as I'm sure they'd like to. The staffs' enthusiasm and hard work made up for the odd decor and we really hope they manage to finish the work as they deserve to make the hotel a success. We wish them all the best.

My husband and I stayed at the Jorvik for 2 nights and found the hotel clean, although it was obvious there was some reburbishing work going on. Plenty of staff available at all times througt the day and reception manned all night. All staff were pleasant and eager to help. The hotel is ideally situated for the centre of York and is only a six minute walk from the railway station. The view from the front of the hotel is breath taking. It is opposite the museum gardens and the church of St. Olives. I would definetely recommend this hotel to friends and family.

I booked 2 double rooms a few months ago for the weekend of the 24th & 25th July 09 as we intended going to York races. I was very upset when I was informed that the hotel was in Administration as it left us virtually no chance of booking an alternative city centre hotel. To my suprise and relief the hotel reopened on the 22nd July 09 and while the hotel did not have all the mod cons in place the staff were really friendly and made us feel most welcome. The hotel is in a great location near to the city gardens and all of the main bars and restaurants and with a new management in place and given a bit of TLC could be a great hotel for the future.
