“Good place to stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2014

Located a five minute walk from the city walls, the hotel has a small but adequate car park. £10 per night charge when you are already paying for a room is a bit steep though. Staff are excellent and very friendly, dining in the restaurant is excellent. Four stars rather than five because the room telephone did not work and was not fixed when reported, WiFi non existent in the room (being fixed though) and a lamp in the room not working. I would definitely recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Back rooms are away from a busy main road.

The room was a little small but suited our needs for this trip perfectly. All of the staff we dealt with were pleasant and professional. There were wedding receptions on for each of our three nights but this in no way affected our stay and we couldn't hear anything from our room (128). I would have rated the hotel "very good" apart from an issue on our final night. At some point between 02:00 and 02:30 i heard someone trying to unlock our room door . This wouldn't have been an issue if they hadn't been successful and then entered the room. On realizing they had the wrong room they very apologetically left and went off to find their own room. Roughly fifteen minutes later this happened again with another guest being able to open our door. We should have probably gone to reception at this point but found a way to deadlock the door from the inside and desperately needed to get back to sleep. When we mentioned this the following morning, the person on reception seemed suitably concerned and was going to speak to the person who worked the night before to try to identify what had gone wrong. During our three night stay our own room card stopped working three times and required re-configuring. Each time we did this we were only asked for a room number, never a name or asked for any kind of identification.
I believe that this was probably an just unlucky incident with a faulty door lock and not typical of the room security at The Churchill but it would make us think twice about staying here again if we returned to York.

We only stayed one night, thank goodness. The staff were pleasant and the room was small and overlooked the car park at the side. There was a loud noise like a fan whirring and another noise on top of that like a vacuum cleaner when we settled into the room. There was some work going on to one of the rooms nearby and we thought it was that and that it would stop around 5 or 6 ish. It didn't - we realised we had been put near the generator and it wasn't going to stop.
We asked to be moved and they said they were rather full but we were shown another room with only a skylight in it and it was still noisy - even worse! There was one more room which was only very slightly quieter which we had to take in the end. Not surprisingly we didn't sleep very well - I hardly slept at all and was so tired the next day that we had to go home early. We weren't asked if the room had been ok by the staff the next day. Also the lift didn't work, the wifi was down and we got given the Financial Times instead of the newspaper we ordered. We won't be going back! (Oh by the way, it was also our wedding anniversary)

Room Tip: Don't go but if you do venture there, check you aren't near the generator or fans

We arrived and were shown to our double room by a ver nice receptionist. However we were disappointed in the room. It was nicely decorated and fresh but tiny. That would have been an inconvenience but we could have lived with it for one night but the bed was a very small, very soft, double. Not good when your husband is 6 ' 4" and we are not skinny people. So I asked if we could move or upgrade. The hotel was very full but the receptionist found us a room with a skylight window and zip together twin beds but warned it would be noisy as there was a wedding disco going on till 12. We stayed out till 11 and bought some earplugs ! The room was fresh and had a great shower and breakfast was nice. We will return

We had a lovely week in York, the hotel was in an excellent position just outside the city walls. The staff were very friendly and helpful the hotel was very clean and the food was excellent, the only down side--was the lift being out of order,

Room Tip: I personally would have a room on the ground floor when we return, but other than that our room was...

We attended the Churchill for a family wedding. The hotel itself it's ok. The pictures on the website do not reflect accurately the venue. We expected a large beautiful staircase in the reception area perfect for wedding pictures when actually it was dark and more inaccessible. The rooms are nice but a bit standard for the price, we asked for a family room and got a double bed and a flimsy pull out camp bed that collapsed when I sat on it ( I am not that fat !) . When it came to the wedding day they were not overly attentive to the wedding party. When the wedding car planned to leave to take the bride to the registery office it was blocked in by many other cars. The staff were not helpful in resolving this meaning the bride was late. The meal was good but the wedding party was small with a few children so when the grown ups left the room to take children to bed when some of them returned the room had been quickly cleared, wedding favours thrown out and personal belongings thrown to the side the room. We didn't feel despite spending large amounts of money on the venue that we were treat well.

Have stayed at this hotel a couple of times before and as usual found it very friendly and welcoming. Got an upgrade so all very nice and the parking is handy to have.
The room was very nice with all the usual refinements and the box of chocolates was a nice touch. Breakfast was good with the normal self service buffet and then choice of cooked breakfasts.
All in all excellent value and would recommend it for anyone wanting to stay in York.
