Oh dear, what a let down.

My first visit, a few years ago, to The Churchill Hotel was fantastic. So many wonderful, and thoughtful things there. There were dressing gowns, writing paper with Churchill on it so you could write to your family from the Hotel, just a bit nicer then sending a postcard, a small box of chocolates on the bed when you arrived, and other thoughtful little things that made the experience feel special. We have been loyal visitors ever since.

Now, it feels like the place has been taken over by Ryan Air. Nearly £170.00 for one night for two of us in a double room. Breakfast is an extra £19.90 (for the two of us), and they even charge you £10.00 per night to park your car! I was told that I had a choice, and didn't have to pay the £10. Just park your car somewhere else!

I asked to speak to the manager, but he wasn't available (3.30pm on a Friday) until 11.00am the following morning.

One hand towel in a double room, and just one bath towel, although we did find another one hidden away in a plastic bag in the closet. One pack of 2 biscuits, and one small tube of cocoa. THERE WERE TWO OF US! No dressing gowns, no writing paper and no choccies.

The free sauna was nice though (sarcasm) The rooms was baking hot, although the radiators were off, a large diameter pipe surrounding the room was red hot and heated the room far too much. It was 1st August, turn it off! We had to sleep with the windows open and had to put up with the noise from the main road only a few meters away. The drunks finally stopped singing at about 3.00am, but the extractors started at 6.20am directly under our window making sleep impossible. I could go on, but come on Churchill, where has the magic gone?

Your prices are still high, but the magic has totally disappeared. Such a shame.

Room Tip: Don't bother

Dear Quattro30,

Sorry that you stay didn't live up to expectations and apologies that the bathrobes and chocolates that should have been in your bedroom this time too were missed out.

We did change our pricing model since you first stayed a couple of years ago and I actually quite approve of the Ryanair analogy as I think that they price very fairly allowing their clients too to pay only for the services that they require.

When you first stayed the price charged for, essentially the same bedroom (you first stayed two doors along on the same corridor), was £195 for B&B with free car parking. Two years later you've been charged £170 for the bedroom, £19.90 for breakfasts and £10 for car parking making £198.90. The total cost is only £4.90 more which allowing for inflation actually represents better value for money than two years ago. The reason for the change is that everyone previously got charged £195 for B&B and parking but now people can stay in the same room for £170 and only need pay extra for those services that they want or need as opposed to having them bundled together unnessarily.

Onto plumbing; the short length of 'large diameter' pipe is actually the hot water pipe for the tap, shower and bath so can't really be turned off without causing a catalogue of complaints! Wherever it runs it will leak some heat and it is larger than a domestic house simply because it needs to be. York has been very hot for more days than normal this summer and some guests have occasionally found it uncomfortably so, as I also have at home so I do sympathise. A few rooms do have air conditioning then we have got fans for those others who request them.

It is sad that you've decided with some finality to 'say goodbye' after many enjoyable stays with us and we've read your review with some sorrow. We truly really do appreciate it when our loyal guests re-tell their memorable stays on here yet understand why others will only take the time to review when they are less satisfied.

Yours sincerely
John Wallace

PS Sorry I had a long and important meeting scheduled on Friday although a Duty Manager was available had you been prepared to speak to them.

Unexpectedly stayed at the Churchill having been transferred from homlea-manor due to them over booking. We weren't disappointed although 3 star, staff very welcoming, clean and spacious room however noise from traffic in the night was disturbing.good quality breakfast and overall value for money

Arrived to discover I had paid a 25% premium for the room by using Late Rooms which cheesed me off. 'You could have had a discount if we'd known you'd stayed with us before' was the next comment which added to the cheesed off feeling. Our room was very cramped but otherwise adequate and this hotel is very well located , just a short walk to the city walls. We watched a band arrive with it's massive audio equipment and then, just as we'd feared, the wedding reception that had been in progress when we arrived proceeded to a full blown evening reception. The noise was awful, our room was situated immediately above the function room. A request to be moved to a quieter room was turned down, 'no others available'. We could not sleep. Having complained that evening and been advised to speak to the duty manager the following morning on both occasions we were met with nothing more than an apology but that there was nothing more they could do. I was promised a phone call from the hotel manager and left my e mail address but so far, 2 weeks later I have heard nothing. I'll not be back.

Room Tip: Check if there's a function on-you may not get any sleep!

Dear Juliet,

I presume that this review was written just before we exchanged emails this week.

Firstly I'll address the noisy function as I did in our email exchange. We are truly sorry that there was disturbance, as explained we normally allocate function guests any bedrooms that we expect to be noisy hence we allocated you room 121 which isn't actually above the function room although I accept it must have ended up seeming as such. Unfortunately the band that was booked to play for that wedding were extremely loud and seemed unwilling to or incapable of playing at any lower volume, the evening staff faced a difficult situation and continued to request that the music be turned down before getting the bride to insist with the band then finishing at 11.30pm and background music at midnight. We have apologised with the upmost sincerity and felt the situation worthy of compensation which you accepted.

I can assure you that you didn't actually pay anymore than you would have elsewhere online when you booked with lastminute.com (not laterooms) as all websites including our own should display the same prices, this is contractually insisted on by all of the online travel agents. The misunderstanding arose because you must have seen the net rate that lastminute.com pay us after their commission of 20%, not 25%, has been deducted. The rate that we received of £100 was not available for any guests to book online although we do obviously have extra flexibility in offering discounts from advertised rates when bookings are made directly. We often useTripadvisor and Facebook since they are popular channels on which we can advertise value added offers to their members ie free breakfast or the current free car parking deal since we can then share the benefit of receiving a commission free booking with the guest.

Since this was written a few days ago I understand why, but am still sad to see, the post bemoans my lack of initial contact. As subsequently explained your contact details are not shared with us by lastminute.com which prevents us from contacting their clients before and after their stay (although we would only ever send out a welcome email with arrival, hotel and local information on, we don't partake in email marketing campaigns). On departure our receptionist therefore explained that I'd need some contact details and you wrote only an email address which eventually proved to be missing a digit. When the email that I wrote on the Monday, as promised, bounced back I was left with no other way of making contact and had to wait for you to touch base with us again this week.

Anyway I'll conclude as this response is getting pretty long winded; again you have our apologies, we trust that everything has been resolved to your satisfaction and we hope we've reassured you of our best intentions.

Regards
John

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2014

Didn't expect to find York in the middle of a heat wave... but The Churchill gave me the only room they had left, a small double in the corner of the building with zero views. It was very comfortable but expensive, given the size of the room and I almost melted. No one offered to help me with my luggage but a kind gentleman at the desk did so when I left: there was a lift but also steps to negotiate. The room was spotless and the bathroom efficient. Very convenient location.

Room Tip: One facing Grosvenor Terrace rather than Bootham.

We fancied a few nights away and what better place than the pituresque York and what a lovely hotel we picked for our stay.
A Lovely period building in a perfect location just a short walk to the city center.
The staff were very attentive both around the hotel and in the resturant and both dinner and breakfast were delicious.

Spotlessly clean, very helpful staff. Stayed in a four poster room which was lovely and luxurious - just as we'd hoped. Bath in the room was a real treat. Only downside was the mattress - wasn't very comfy.
