The desk clerk said our room was just up the stairs, but after lugging our heavy luggage up four flights were were surprised by a very nice room. Unfortunately the windows had been painted shut, so we couldn't open them. The room was sweltering, so we asked for another room. We were given another room in an unrefurbished part of the hotel. There was an elevator in the unrefurbished back part of the hotel, but it wasn't working. So we trudged up additional stairs to a musty smelling but relatively comfortable room and had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was excellent with a continental buffet and several choices for a cooked breakfast. There's lots of off free off street parking and it's a quick walk to the Minster. Free Internet is only available in the lobby and bar. We'd recommend the Minster Hotel, but only if they give you a lower floor room that is refurbished.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Minster Hotel following your stay, my apologies that you were in anyway disappointed with any aspect of your stay. The Hotel has now completed over 90% of the refurbishment work, including the repair to the lift. Unfortunatly we allocated you a newly refurbished room on the 3rd floor, we now have 19 rooms on ground or 1st floor level, plus 6 on the 2nd floor which have access via the lift. I am confident that any future guest will notice the improvements following your stay, and we will wherever possible, always accommodate guests requests to be on lower or ground floor rooms. once again thank you for your time and your feedback.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at the Minster. The hotel is very near all the bustle of the city centre and is very comfortable. Our room on the first floor had been recently refurbished to a very high standard and was immaculately clean. The shower cabinet was luxuriously large!
Breakfast was a feast in a lovely dining room and in fact we did not need lunch for the four days we stayed in York.
All the staff were very helpful and friendly and we look forward to staying at the Minster in the future.

We stayed at the hotel from 1 ~ 7 October. Great location and only a short stroll into the heart of York, with good car parking at the rear. Clean hotel, newly refurbished rooms and excellent breakfasts.

However, during our stay there was ongoing refurbishment work going on and the builders work unfortunately did not sit happily with the enjoyment of the hotel. We were the couple mention in the report by "Denise_dee" from Toronto and we had the unpleasant experience of rain dripping into the room and onto the bed at 3.00am in the morning ... slowly getting faster and faster. There was no staff on duty at the reception, we later found out that there is on staff on duty in the hotel overnight, and only a notice on the reception desk indicating an emergency telephone number to ring if there was an emergency. I rang the number but it only rang downstairs at the reception desk. We tried contacting the police to obtain the contact number of the hotel owner but advised that no details were on record. Telephoned the telephone number of the Alarm/CCTV Company but only able to leave a message on the telephone. Eventually we had to return to the room, after leaving a message on the reception desk, and position various waste bins and tea cups on the floor and on the bed to catch the now excessive water coming through the ceiling, running down the wall and dripping onto the bed ...... a bit like "Faulty Tower's " ! !

We were eventually moved to a new room at 07.00am when staff came back into the hotel. Very little concern was noticed and no real apology. The excuse given to us for for no contact person in the early hours of the morning was that the emergency telephone number should have transferred the call to a member of staff located across the street. However, the staff admitted that the management were aware that the mobile phones were not very good and did not always work ..... and also the staff member could not be held responsible if they perhaps slept through a call ! ! !

Another problem with builders operating in the hotel was that water and electricity was often not operation between 16.00 ~ 18.00, as it was being cut off to carry out work. Not good when you return to your room after a busy day enjoying the sights of York.

Overall, the hotel could certainly be good but management need to ensure the safety of their guest at all times through the night and that you personally need to ensure that there no builders working within the hotel ..... guests and builders do not mix very well ! !.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review, my sincerest apologies for the problems you encountered, as previously mentioned, the problem with your room has now been rectified, the refurbishment of over 60% of the rooms is now complete, and the team have now moved to the rear of the hotel. I am unable to explain why you encountered the problems you did with the phone, we always have someone on site 24 hours a day, due to the problems that evening we have purchased a new phone system, and have subsequently not had any similar issues.
Once again my sincerest apologies, and I can assure you that all the problems that you experienced have been resolved, and will not occur again.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Minster hotel. The hotel is in an excellent location and is only a stones throw away from the hustle and bustle of the centre if York. On arrival at the hotel we were offered a room but there was a drainage problem and we asked if we could be moved, Rachel on reception sorted this in a matter of seconds! When we got to our room it was clean and spacious and I actually thought the room had been refurbished when it hadn't!!! Breakfast at this hotel is second to non and we missed lunch every day as we were full up! The staff were amazing, always happy to talk to you and my daughter fell in love with Rachel on reception! The Areas of the hotel that have been decorated look really good and we look forward to seeing the four poster bedrooms the night Porter was telling us about ( sorry didn't catch his name!). We regularly stay in 4 * plus hotels so I was a little dubious before arriving here but I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to York! Keep up the good work and we look forward to seeing the finished hotel next year!!

From the initial booking to the end of the stay the staff could not have been more helpful. Smiles for miles & it means a lot. Nice room recently refurbed and great bathroom etc.
Breakfast was top draw and the staff were quick & efficient. The owner Tony was happy to discuss the areas and help and Kelle was very good on reception etc.
Will be back sometime next year with g/children likely.
Bed & pillows hard for us but assured that this would be changed soon
