Wheatlands Lodge Hotel

Stayed here for one night with partner, sister and her partner, booked via a well-known booking site. Reasons for booking this accommodation were location and check-out time. Location was fine, about a ten minute walk to the main shopping area, and plenty of public transport passing by. The check-out was advertised as 10.00 - 11.30 a.m. (and confirmed on my booking confirmation). On return from our trip, checked four more booking sites and the same on there. We were told on arrival that check-out was 10 a.m. This needs sorting out by the hotel in relation to booking sites, because this was a definite factor that would have put us off booking if described accurately. We weren't the only disgruntled visitors in this respect.

The term "limited parking" is an understatement - roughly 10 parking spaces per 60 rooms in the rear car park. This is overcome by leaving your keys at reception, and cars being shuffled round. There are a handful of on-street parking spaces at the front (free, but heavily occupied).

The hotel has an attractive frontage and garden, with seating outside. It has a welcoming bar and lounge areas, with multi-tasking staff carrying out more than one role. We asked what time breakfast was, and were staggered to find out there was an hour and a quarter window for 60 rooms, and this time was 7.45 to 9 a.m. on a weekend morning (time not advertised on booking site/hotel's own site). Hey ho, we had to check-out early anyway!

Our room was up a lot of stairs (no lift), and was quite adequate, if a little tired looking. The double bed was two singles together, comfortable enough, if a little on the short side (and I'm well under 6"). The bathroom looked recently refurbished and looked nice. It had no bath, and the water pressure for the shower was a bit feeble. Provided in the bathroom are towels and tablets of soap. The room and bathroom were well-heated.

We intended to have a late night out in York - this was severely curtailed due to early breakfast/check-out times.

We headed down for breakfast around 8.40. It appears that many other guests had the same idea, whcih was commented on by a waitress (we were told serving was until 9, so we didn't think we were "late"!). Consequently there were no clear, free tables. The staff were clearly feeling under pressure, and we were apologised to for having to wait for a clear table. We also couldn't sit with the other members of our party.

We headed into York to do some shopping, and the duty receptionist/manager was helpful and accommodating about leaving a car in the car park. Very useful.

Strolling past a well-known chain hotel on the way in to York at 10.30 a.m., I eyed their guests with jealousy as they were sitting down to a leisurely breakfast.

Overall, an adequate accommodation, not where I would have stayed, however, had the correct information been more available about check-out/breakfast times. Not perhaps our normal choice/style of accommodation. Does seem to have a number of appreciative, retuning older visitors.

Myself and my partner have been staying at this hotel for ten years visiting york at least twice a year. They are very accommodating and we have never had bad service. We have recommended this hotel to our friends who have also enjoyed staying there. The manager will always go out of his way to sort out any problems if they may arise. The food is good and so are the rates. It is of easy walking distance of the town centre. The staff are very polite and friendly. So if you visit york I would say stay at the Wheatlands good value all round.

We stay here every Christmas, whilst we do our Christmas shopping. The hotel is ideally situated to walk into town (about 10-15 minutes), or if like us, you have a not so mobile mother with you, 5 mins in a taxi.
Reception are more than happy to 'phone a taxi for you.
The rooms are basic, but have what you need for a short stay and are lovely and warm, perfectly clean and with plently of room.
The bar and reception area are friendly and welcoming and you do not get ripped off with bar prices.
The food is good, honest, British fare. It's not fancy or award winning stuff but is always enjoyable and plentiful. Breakfast is really good with lots of choices on cereals, fruit juices and fresh fruit plus the full English or poached eggs and Yorkshire ham.
The staff are very friendly and efficient.
The only draw back is car parking - there are not many spaces at the hotel but you can double park and the manager will keep hold of your keys and shuffle the cars around. He will always get you a space - not sure how he does it!! Remember, you are almost in the centre of the city so you cannot expect a huge car park.
We would not stay anywhere else and go back every year. We even book it around June time to ensure we get in as it gets booked up quickly.

The location of the hotel is its best quality. 5 minute into the old town, where there are plenty of pubs and restaurants.
The rooms (stayed in room 33) are basic, with no frills. I thought that the bed was hard, the pillows flat and the bathroom was really tiny.
The hotel is very clean, but staff on reception were a bit grumpy when I asked for the wifi code. They didn't know what wifi was and when I eventually obtained the password the wifi did not work.
Best thing was the full English breakfast, but very meager potions. If you doubled the size of the breaskfast it still won't be enough.
Would suggest staying at the Premier Lodge just down the road. A little cheaper, a little nearer to the town and you know what you are going to get.

I was a bit wary of this hotel because of some dodgy rewiews on this website, but they made me such a good offer for a 3 day stay (3 days for the price of 2, child for free, breakfast and dinner , and I could cancel the reservation 24 hours before with no penalty) that I decided to try. The family room they gave us was big and very very nice, the bathroom a bit cold but brand new, the shower was very big, plenty of space over the sink, big window, beds were comfortable, breakfast and dinners were perfectly acceptable, free wi.fi everywhere, lovely lounge and kindness thoughout our stay. The hotel was clean and cheerful, the room was very quiet and we had a super stay, no extra charge for paying with credit card either.

Before booking a four night break at the Wheatlands Lodge Hotel, Scarcroft Road, York I checked reviews on TripAdvisor and was somewhat intrigued to see that although the large majority of visitors were pleased with the hotel, there were one or two negative views. Well I’m pleased to report that our experience in early December 09 was very positive and in fact the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful in making our stay very enjoyable.
Our room (No. 5) was at the front of the hotel and was of a good size and it had a well designed and modern shower room. The twin beds appeared new and the bed coverings were smart and of good quality. Room servicing was to a decent standard and the room was pleasantly warm throughout our stay.
The food was enjoyable, breakfast offering a selection of cereals and fruit to start, followed by choices of cooked breakfast. Evening dinners offered choices of simple, well prepared food all served by friendly, efficient staff who actually seemed to be enjoying what they were doing.
The ground floor areas around the reception desk and the bar consisted of a series of interlinked lounges, all very smart and well decorated and coal effect gas fires gave a warm homely feel to the hotel. I was informed that there was a continual programme of updating and decorating taking place and that the bar area was just about to have a makeover.
The management are obviously on top of things here and seem to be able to pass on their enthusiasm to their staff who made our stay very enjoyable. I have spent many years travelling in the UK and mainland Europe on business with no budget restrictions and this is the type of hotel I would always endeavour to stay in. It’s streets ahead of many so called 3 and 4 star establishments and offers such a warm and friendly welcome. The hotel location is very convenient for visiting York’s centre which is just a short stroll away or a quick bus ride if preferred.
I’m now trying to think of an excuse to return here!

We spent a very pleasant short break at the Wheatlands Lodge Hotel last week. Our stay was organised by Caledonian Travel and after reading some of the reviews on this website I was starting to dread what the hotel was going to be like and wondering what we had let oruselves in for.

However, we needn't have worried. Our coach driver, Bill, told us on the way down that the hotel was excellent and one of the best ones he has stayed in and we must admit, we have to agree with him.

Our bedroom was clean and tidy, not enormous but spacious enough. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom was small but modern with one of the best power showers we've had in a hotel.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful and couldn't be faulted in any way. Our bedroom was too hot when we arrived but after mentioning it to the reception on the way to our evening meal, someone came to sort it the same evening.

There was a limited menu each evening but the meals were tasty and the service again was friendly and first class.

Wheatlands Lodge is a good, honest, family run hotel which is great value for money. The staff all enjoy what they are doing and it rubs off on the guests making everyone in our parties stay an enjoyable one.

We certainly enjoyed our stay at the Wheatlands Lodge and wouldn't hesitate in going back.
