Stayed here for one night with partner, sister and her partner, booked via a well-known booking site. Reasons for booking this accommodation were location and check-out time. Location was fine, about a ten minute walk to the main shopping area, and plenty of public transport passing by. The check-out was advertised as 10.00 - 11.30 a.m. (and confirmed on my booking confirmation). On return from our trip, checked four more booking sites and the same on there. We were told on arrival that check-out was 10 a.m. This needs sorting out by the hotel in relation to booking sites, because this was a definite factor that would have put us off booking if described accurately. We weren't the only disgruntled visitors in this respect.
The term "limited parking" is an understatement - roughly 10 parking spaces per 60 rooms in the rear car park. This is overcome by leaving your keys at reception, and cars being shuffled round. There are a handful of on-street parking spaces at the front (free, but heavily occupied).
The hotel has an attractive frontage and garden, with seating outside. It has a welcoming bar and lounge areas, with multi-tasking staff carrying out more than one role. We asked what time breakfast was, and were staggered to find out there was an hour and a quarter window for 60 rooms, and this time was 7.45 to 9 a.m. on a weekend morning (time not advertised on booking site/hotel's own site). Hey ho, we had to check-out early anyway!
Our room was up a lot of stairs (no lift), and was quite adequate, if a little tired looking. The double bed was two singles together, comfortable enough, if a little on the short side (and I'm well under 6"). The bathroom looked recently refurbished and looked nice. It had no bath, and the water pressure for the shower was a bit feeble. Provided in the bathroom are towels and tablets of soap. The room and bathroom were well-heated.
We intended to have a late night out in York - this was severely curtailed due to early breakfast/check-out times.
We headed down for breakfast around 8.40. It appears that many other guests had the same idea, whcih was commented on by a waitress (we were told serving was until 9, so we didn't think we were "late"!). Consequently there were no clear, free tables. The staff were clearly feeling under pressure, and we were apologised to for having to wait for a clear table. We also couldn't sit with the other members of our party.
We headed into York to do some shopping, and the duty receptionist/manager was helpful and accommodating about leaving a car in the car park. Very useful.
Strolling past a well-known chain hotel on the way in to York at 10.30 a.m., I eyed their guests with jealousy as they were sitting down to a leisurely breakfast.
Overall, an adequate accommodation, not where I would have stayed, however, had the correct information been more available about check-out/breakfast times. Not perhaps our normal choice/style of accommodation. Does seem to have a number of appreciative, retuning older visitors.
