Great location, bright rooms, but only stairs

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 9, 2019
This hotel is extremely well located for walking to the historic and tourist parts of York. It has a large carpark (at an extra charge). All staff were friendly and efficient, and the rooms are bright, comfortable and airconditioned. The only drawback is the absence of an elevator making rooms on the second floor barely accessible for older guests with luggage. Breakfast was very good. Recommended as a place to stay in York if you can handle 30+ stairs to your bedroom.
Date of stay: August 2019
Room Tip: Avoid a room on the second floor.

Dear LaCassaigne

Thank you for your feedback, I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back to Middletons Hotel again soon. As we are a collection of grade 2 listed buildings we are unable to have a lift installed, however we do have a number of ground floor rooms available on request for any guest who is unable to take the stairs.

I failed to notice when booking there is a ten pound charge for parki g which I thought was outrageous! Hotel is very clean but our room had a very nasty foisty smell. Everything in the room was spotless. Breakfast was not so great. Our full English looked as if it had been warmed up. Great location and shame the pool is only for little ones. Would not visit again.

We stayed here with another couple for my sisters birthday and as part of a race day out. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the decor to an extremely high standard. We stayed in 2 newly renovated rooms and the little touches in the room made a difference. The location is absolutely perfect as it is right in the centre of town with on site parking.

Where to start? Maybe with our arrival. We were a little early (20 mins). Waited a while for someone to come to the desk - no bell to ring and no signs. Room was not ready (no problem) so went off for an iced coke (very hot day).
Room was on top floor and was extremely poky - small and cramped - for a 5 day stay. No wardrobe, just a rail and very limited drawer space. Beds were comfortable, so it sort of met the minimum standard required.
Reception for most of the time was a nightmare, often there was no-one there and I had to call out (politely) to get attention. When they were present, they were very helpful.
We didn't eat there in the evening as the menu looked very limited, but breakfast was very good, except for one day when we waited to be asked if we wanted tea or coffee, then had to ask three times for our breakfast order to be taken, they ran out of orange juice when I wanted some and the summer fruit compote had no fruit in it, only juice. The breakfast was supposedly 'cooked to order' on some days it appeared that the breakfast items were pre-cooked and heated up to order (sausages can't be cooked in 5 minutes and sometimes the bacon was dry).
For all of this, we paid a lot of money - maybe due to my son getting married on a York race weekend - the charge for Friday and Saturday was £100 more than the charge for the Sunday and Monday. I suppose that is the market at work.
So, poor value for money but not dreadful. However, I won't be going back.
Note: parking was £10 per day extra.

Lovely hotel, really friendly staff and very accomodating. stayed for one night and would stay here again. Breakfast was really nice with plenty of choice. You order your cooked breakfast from the menu and the continental breakfast is buffet style. Hotel is central and not far from York races. Yes you pay £10 to park but that is standard for York and for approx 24 hours worth of parking it is reasonable in my opinion.

When we first arrived, we were given a room that was small, had a moldy smell and had no air conditioning. After complaining about the smell, we were told that there was only one other room available, which we ended up sleeping in for one night. This rooms was very large (a family suite) but again had no air conditioning and was hot as an oven. We chose this room because it didn't have the bad smell. We weren't able to sleep that night because of the heat. We complained again and ended up getting a recently renovated room and it was lovely: very clean, comfortable bed, functioning air conditioning, single-use coffee maker, clean bathroom, etc.. So the two first rooms deserve a one star. The third room is a five star. So when booking at this hotel, try to request a new room... unless you like smelly or hot rooms
On the plus side, staff seemed to genuinely care about our situation.
