Where to start? Maybe with our arrival. We were a little early (20 mins). Waited a while for someone to come to the desk - no bell to ring and no signs. Room was not ready (no problem) so went off for an iced coke (very hot day).
Room was on top floor and was extremely poky - small and cramped - for a 5 day stay. No wardrobe, just a rail and very limited drawer space. Beds were comfortable, so it sort of met the minimum standard required.
Reception for most of the time was a nightmare, often there was no-one there and I had to call out (politely) to get attention. When they were present, they were very helpful.
We didn't eat there in the evening as the menu looked very limited, but breakfast was very good, except for one day when we waited to be asked if we wanted tea or coffee, then had to ask three times for our breakfast order to be taken, they ran out of orange juice when I wanted some and the summer fruit compote had no fruit in it, only juice. The breakfast was supposedly 'cooked to order' on some days it appeared that the breakfast items were pre-cooked and heated up to order (sausages can't be cooked in 5 minutes and sometimes the bacon was dry).
For all of this, we paid a lot of money - maybe due to my son getting married on a York race weekend - the charge for Friday and Saturday was £100 more than the charge for the Sunday and Monday. I suppose that is the market at work.
So, poor value for money but not dreadful. However, I won't be going back.
Note: parking was £10 per day extra.
