“Great staff & hotel....but poor breakfast”
Reviewed December 17, 2010

Stayed at the Judges for 2 nights in early December and occupied a newly refurbished suite (room 9). Great welcome by the front of house and room spacious and very nice, however there were no robes in the room and room was really chilly due freezing weather and the very large windows (single glazed due to the period of hotel). Front of house quickly resolved both by providing the robes and an extra heater within minutes.Would describe room 9 more as a family room as opposed to a suite because whilst there is a sofa bed there is no formal seating area (e.g to have/eat a room service breakfast). Breakfast was great on Saturday morning but really bad on Sunday morning. On Sunday, we eventually had to ask for toast (25 mins after getting our hot drinks). When the breakfast arrived after a delay, the bacon was seriously undercooked. The waitress agreed & took the bacon away to be cooked further and then we noticed the fried eggs were virtually raw too with glutinous white and barely sealed, cold yolks. The waitress did note our frustration with an apology and asked if we would like a fresh breakfast cooked but by this point we were so hungry and frustrated that we declined and just ate what was properly cooked on our plates and our now cold toast !. Nothing further was said on the matter despite the waitress confirming she had brought it to the attention of the kitchen and front of house. Check out was very smooth and friendly (albeit with no ref to our poor breakfast). Would definately recommend The Judges as the staff, location and beautiful building make for a great welcoming stay, however like previous guests have said, you do take your chances with the breakfast. Its a real shame as this could so easily be rectified, and would turn a great stay into a fantastic one !

I stayed in this hotel at the end of November 2010 and found it exceptionally friendly, quiet, comfortable, great staff with that rare abilty to be hospitable and friendly without being obsequious. i would recommend it without hesitation to either a friend or business person - though it is not corporate (thank goodness). very central and near various good pubs and restaurants

Room 8 was great - glimpses of the minster and away from the sometimes nosy street below. The room was soooo comfortable and luxurious, Breakfast was delicious. Bathroom/bath superbly relaxing. Stay if you can.

Front of house staff were extremely friendly and accomodating during our stay. They had moved our room on arrival but reduced the rate and put a decent bottle of wine in the new one. No problem there.
Unlike other guests however, breakfast was terrible on both days. Sausages were horrible on the first day (I suspect they were vegetarian), tomatoes were raw, poached eggs were overdone and the fried eggs had been cooked in very dirty oil. On day 2 we waited 30 minutes after finishing our cereal before the cooked breakfast came and it was still as bad. On the Saturday we went into the cellar bar for a sandwich but were told that they weren't accepting any more orders because the wait was two long (overheard a group next to us say they had been there 2 and half hours). It wasn't even that busy. Bar staff were having to placate customers with free drinks.
As we were paying our bill to leave the hotel a chef walked through reception. His "whites" were filthy.
It is such a shame that an otherwise perfect hotel can be let down by something as basic as food. Friends have told us that they have had nice meals there in the past and were shocked by our experience. I can only assume that they are having staffing problems in that area. Until it is rectified, I'm afraid I can't recommend it for anything other than "room only".

Dear Theshaws,

Thank you for your review and kind words regarding the hotel and front of house staff.

I was deeply concerned to read about your experiences at breakfast and in the Cellar Bar. We endeavour to exceed all of our guests expectations, in all areas, and if we failed to deliver this to you, I cannot apologize enough.

After a thorough investigation regarding, firstly, your comments and, secondly, experiences of other guests that weekend, the Chef in question is no longer employed by the hotel. Furthermore, our Head Chef has spent time retraining the rest of the kitchen team, to prevent anything like this happening again.

Once again, let me apologize for your stay with us being anything other than perfect.

Yours Sincerely

Simon J. Shipway

Stayed for one night, wish it was more, had room 7 at the top of hotel, didnt have a view of York Minster but still an excellent room, with a jacuzzi bath, very relaxing. Little bit of noise outside late at night, but you expect that from every town or city centre on a friday night. the breakfast was particularly good, try the scrambled eggs and salmon. Would visit again.

Friendly staff, but lacking the small touches that this hotel needs to correct if it wants to be classed as a top range hotel to stay in while you are staying in York. Simple things like the bathroom toiletries being replaced when they have been used by the previous guests so that you have unopened shower gel, shampoo ect when you first use the bathroom, not the last guests seconds, also when paying over £225 per night per room i do not really expect to have to pay for my newspaper that i had every morning, which surprised me when i checked out and was told i had to pay for them ( have they not heard of the word complimentary) they are free in all the 4* or 5* hotels i have stayed in. Like i say small things, but the small things in life go a long way and say a lot about the hotel's management or owners.
The hotel is in a excellent position, easy walking distance to most tourist places around the city, and the rooms are comfortable, if staying at a room at the rear of the hotel there is a small amount of noise which comes from a italian restaurant when they dispose of their empty bottles into the bottle banks.
The city of York is a great place to visit and would recommend going there, which we will be doing again but we would not stay at this hotel again.

Dear Earthmatters,

Firstly, thank you for your comments. All Feedback we receive is extremely useful and gives us a chance to improve the standards we offer. I am glad you enjoyed our central location, found our staff friendly and your rooms comfortable, however, I cannot apologize enough regarding the toiletries in your room. As you quite rightly say, these are usually fresh for our guests' arrival and then replenished throughout their stay. Whilst I cannot explain why this was not the case for your arrival, I can assure you that all our housekeeping team have been re-trained to prevent this happening again.
Following your comments and in an effort to offer value for money, all morning newspapers are now complimentary to our guests.
I would be very grateful for the opportunity to speak to you directly about your stay. If you have a chance please contact me at the hotel on (01904) 638733 or info@judgeslodgings.com.

Yours Sincerely

Simon J. Shipway
