“A fantastic friendly hotel”
Reviewed June 12, 2013 via mobile

We had a fabulous 2 night break at this fabulous hotel. The location is great, the rooms were very clean and spacious and the staff are more than willing to help. We panicked when we couldn't find an iron in our room as we packed in rather a hurry but the staff were very quick to put one in our room upon request. The breakfast was very nice, great selection and the cellar bar is a lovely place to enjoy a nice relaxing drink. In regards to parking we would recommend to park at marygate and take the short walk through the York museum gardens and then the hotel is straight across the road. We would also recommend to pay by text/phone rather than buy 2 day tickets as we were advised by York city parking! Currently disputing a parking ticket!!! Overall our stay was fantastic, we will definitely be returning to the judges lodgings in the future. The only thing I could suggest is that they fit the rooms with air con, we found the room to be rather 'stuffy' on a warm day. Would highly recommend!

Thank you for taking the time to write us a wonderful review. We have been through some refurbishments to make our Cellar Bar and terrace more comfortable and welcoming than ever before, so we are delighted you enjoyed your time here. We send our apologies about the confusing car park situation. If you would like us to contact the Council on your behalf to resolve the situation, we would do so gladly, just let us know via telephone or email. You will be glad to hear we have just secured some parking vouchers which we can offer our guests at the hotel for a £10.00 fee in the Marygate car park. Hopefully this will reduce car parking confusion in the future! We would like to welcome you back at Judges at some stage, so do let us know and we can arrange some special. Thank you.

Kind regards,
Nick James - Manager and all the team at the Judges Lodgings.

We enjoyed a great stay last weekend at The Judges Lodgings, ALL the staff we had contact with were really efficient and friendly even at the end of the day after a long shift. We stayed in room 9 a fantastic suite, the breakfast had a great choice and a good start to the day. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the Courtyard which was the 'the place to be on a sunny day'. The hotel enjoys a good location central to everything York has to offer.
Thank you to all the team!

We stayed in Room 5, a superior 'character' room, for one night. The room was on the top floor and was nicely furnished with a small seating area too. The bathroom was good also with a jacuzzi bath and powerful shower. My only criticism would be the creaky floorboards, but this is an old property and it's to be expected.
Breakfast was good; a choice of fruit, cereals and pastries before a full English or bacon/sausage sandwiches.
If you want to explore the beautiful streets of York then this is the perfect base to do it from, it's bang central. Just around the corner from pretty much everywhere!
My only gripe would be that the public areas in the hotel always seemed to be in a bit of a mess. The office behind the check-in desk and the linen cupboard both had the doors wide open and it took a little bit of the shine of such a stunning building. Also the table at the bottom of the stairs was covered with napkins and the sideboard on the first floor always had piles of linen on it. It's a shame to spoil the lovely decor with clutter guys!
But, would I return? Yes.

Many thanks for your review of your stay with us and I am pleased you had a great time in York and enjoyed our central location! Thank you also for the other points that you have raised- in particular with regards to the housekeeping and office areas. We are going to be moving these to more “behind the scenes” as part of the next stage of our redevelopment for precisely the reasons you have raised- I agree that it is such a fabulous building and deserves to be shown off in all of its glory! Please follow our blog on our website to keep up to date with all developments and we hope to see you again soon.

Kind regards,
Nick James - Manager and all the team at The Judges Lodgings.

This was the first time we have stayed at the Judges' Lodgings since Thwaites have taken over and I must say the good quality of service has improved further!

We stayed two nights for a 'mini-moon' after getting married. We stayed in Room 2 - the suite with a 7ft four poster bed, lounge area and views of York Minster. All the arrangements I had organised with staff in advance were in the room on our arrival; the hotel manager was exceedingly friendly and chatty and very helpful with our bags.

The room was fantasic; the bathroom, complete with jacuzzi bath and separate shower was part of the room and the lounge area had stunning views over rooftops to the Minster. The room had all the usual facilities and the bed was stunningly comfortable.

Service at breakfast was good and the staff were again very friendly.

We really cannot praise the hotel or the staff enough! It appears the whole place has become much more professional and we will definitely be staying again; it is the only place to stay in York!

Room Tip: Room 2 is an amazing treat for a special occassion.

Thank you for taking the time to write us such a great review. We are thrilled to hear you like the changes we have implemented and that you wish to return again. A ‘mini-moon’ is indeed a very special occasion, and Room 2 fitting for the event. We do have plans for further developments towards the end of the year, so it would be great to have you back at the same time next year, if not before. Thank you.

Kind regards,

We drank and ate there on two occasions, both times seated in an attractive front courtyard. Very pleasant. Coffee delicious and food of a high standard. Their own homemade burger was particularly nice, well presented. Our waiter Oliver, was very professional and attentive.
Lots of tables out front but not enough chairs. Why the slabs of stone for stools? Too cold!
Overall a good experience.
Didn't go inside other than to go to the loo, but looked really nice.

A lovely break in York. Fantastic rooms at the hotel very clean and nice decor in the feature room which was a nice suprise as I thought we had booked a different room! All the staff were very friendly and keen to help with ideas for visits/restaurants and seemed knowledgeable about the area. Still some ongoing building work but not too much of a disturbance, some of the scaffolding taken down while we were there and it is a lovely building. The continental breakfast was a very good selection and there were no problems with this at all. It will be nice to return to the hotel when the restaurant is open, looking forward to another stay.

Room Tip: we had a feature room and it was beautiful

This has the potential to be a really good hotel, but the new owners (Thwaite's brewery) only took over in November 2012, and there was a lot of work to do to get it up to modern standards. When we stayed there wasn't actually a functioning kitchen (!) but there should be now. The building is wonderful, with high ceilings, panelling, and an oval staircase. The room we had, No. 1, was very attractive Georgian, and well appointed with a good bathroom and a huge and very comfortable bed. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was rudimentary, but that should change. But I hope the dining room will stop playing Radio 1 rather loudly!

It really is right in the centre of the City, and provides an oasis. But we happened to be there on a Race Day, and the crowds outside can get noisy. Also, whilst we arrived OK late at night, the traffic signs change, Hogwart's-staircase style, and in the day time I cannot see that access is legally possible - Lendal is in the central pedestrianised area, and in the daytime all access roads are 'No Vehicles'. The Hotel has an advice note about where to park which says 'you are welcome to drop luggage off but cannot park', but it would be helpful to have clarification about whether/when access if allowed. I wouldn't like an £80 fine just for dropping off the suitcases. If you come by train, though, no problem, and it is five to ten minutes' walk from the station.

In short, not perfect, but a great experience, and the new owners really are trying to make the most of the building's potential.

Room Tip: Front rooms grand but potentially noisy. Back rooms have view of Minster.

Firsty thank you for your review and I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I am especially pleased that you found the team friendly and helpful throughout! The weekend was particularly lively in York as there was a busy race meeting and a Bank Holiday as well as the fantastic weather we had.

We have now reopened our kitchen fully from May 27th so we are now offering cooked food all day from breakfast untl late. I apologise for Radio 1 playing and this should not have happened. With regards to the access to the hotel, please be assured that the route next to the pedestrianised area is absolutely safe to use and we have an agreement with York City council allowing hotel guests to drive around and drop off at the hotel - I agree that the signage is somewhat confusing though!

Please follow our progress on our blog on our website to keep up to daet with our future plans.

Kind regards,
Nick James - Manager and all the team at The Judges Lodgings.
