The food here was poor on the day we visited; I had the beef rib pie that was full of fatty meat and my wife’s slow-braised lamb shoulder was also fatty and mostly bone.
There are plenty of other pubs/restaurants in the immediate vicinity and if you are looking for food I would recommend trying one of these before settling for this establishment. However, this pub is great for a drink and seemed to be very popular with locals.

We ordered a burger for lunch and expected your standard pub type burger to be served! How we ate our words! The burgers we were served were absolutely huge and most definitely home made! Very tasty indeed! All washed down with a lovely, crisp, cold cider!

Whilst this pub is well located for York visitors and the food is passably acceptable, it has a rather dingy interior (in contrast to its outside appearance) and has a distinct "stale beer" smell when you enter it.

With all the other, vastly superior, pubs/restaurants in its immediate vicinity, I find it very hard to understand why anyone would choose this as a dining or drinking option.

During a day trip to York, we were attracted to the Cross Keys by the offer of a meal and drink for £6. Usually these offers mean small platefuls of less than average quality food...but not here! The sausage and mash, and gammon steak that we had were scrumptious, and although I didn`t notice what make the pint of cask ale was, it was brilliant. Service was friendly and efficient. I would definitely recommend this pub for good value, well-cooked food during the day. Just a shame it`ll probably be ages before I`m back in York, so can`t go back for seconds :-(

For dinner, I ordered half a roast duck that was served with mash and vegetable. It was delicious and surprisingly not too greasy for a duck dish. It goes without saying that the dinner was washed down by few pints of beer.
