“What a Shambles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

This street in York has remained over the years.
Although it has shops ,etc. it is truly an old victorian cobbled street.
It is next to Newgate market and in the city centre.
Ideal for families to see what old York looked like.

“Unique”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

A must-see in York, along with the city walls and the York Minster. We took the kids here and wandered through the adjacent historic medieval neighborhood.

“Well worth a visit.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014 via mobile

Me and my partner always go to the Shambles when we are in York. I know that the shops are quite touristy but this does not bother me as I think the architecture is lovely and it is so quaint. It is a shame that the Past Images store is not there any more though.

“Fantastic medieval street”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

The Shambles is a must-see street in York. A restored medieval street with loads of original features from its past - butcher's hooks and the like - and with a wealth of beautiful buildings and lovely independent shops. Really atmospheric, like stepping back in time.

“Atmospheric even with modern shops”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2014

Although restored way beyond its original condition, it retains the claustrophobic atmosphere of bygone times. Children bought up knowing only modern shopping centers can with a little imagination get a glimpse of how things were in the past, with the over hanging upper storeys and wooden fronts, intersected by narrow alleyways. The shops are a mixture of the touristy and banal but with the odd interesting one. Worth a visit for a pleasant stroll on the way to the Minster.
