Owner description: Discover thousands of years of York's history in one place, from prehistory to the city's medieval splendour. Walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor, kneel at St William's shrine, see the monsters of the deep that swam when Yorkshire was beneath the see and much more in our fantastic galleries in the hear of the city.

What there is at the museum is very interesting but I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more to see. We also found the museum didn't "flow" very well and you doubled back on yourself to make sure you had seen everything. A little on the pricey side for what is on show in my opinion.

“History for everyone”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

The use of clear, everyday language to describe the exhibits here really brings history to life . You feel neither baffled by academic explanations nor 'spoken down' to , and as a result actually read and digest the info given in the captions and signboards attached to the items on display. You get a real feel for life in York through the ages. There's plenty of video support and a particularly nice touch is the amount of 'hands-on' equipment such as Roman style sandals and cloaks provided to encourage active participation by younger visitors. No 'do not touch' signs here - visitors are encouraged to walk on a Roman mosaic floor wearing authentic footwear ! The various galleries are easy to negotiate, and the museum shop stocks a selection of reasonably priced souvenirs , many of them different to the usual "production line" gifts offered by venues of this type. Tickets are valid for a year, which is a bonus, and at the time of my visit (Dec13) a combined ticket also offering entry to the Castle Museum was available at a bargain rate.

“Interesting Displays in Beautiful Gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013

Displays of interesting finds that bring home the importance of York throughout history. Good video information.
Lovely Gardens with the ruins of St Mary's Abbey. Well worth a visit.
A combined ticket for this museum and the Castle Museum will reduce the cost and is valid for a year from date of purchase.

“A must for history buffs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

The museum contains the history, both human and animal, of York and Yorkshire. It is an interesting mix of traditional displays interspersed with modern cinematic techniques. The building itself is partly built into the ruins of the old St Mary's abbey, and contains artifacts from there and from York archaeological digs, some of them being very rare. The entrance fee is quite expensive but the ticket lasts a year and is also free to York residents. I have now been three times and still find something new to see.

“Plenty to see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

The walk up to the museum is lovely, set in some beautiful park land perfect for picnics. The price for the tickets was definitely worth what we paid for 2 adults and a child under 5. There was plenty to see in the museum, covering all the different periods of York's history, from the Romans to early modern history. The "extinct" exhibition was particularly interesting for the 3 year old with us and there were plenty of interactive "play" areas for younger children to get more hands on. I was a little disappointed with the Richard III exhibition, which was my reason for wanting to visit. I thought there could have been more to this, but the other permanent exhibitions made up for it. We had a nice couple of hours wandering around and looking at everything at our own pace.
