Owner description: Discover thousands of years of York's history in one place, from prehistory to the city's medieval splendour. Walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor, kneel at St William's shrine, see the monsters of the deep that swam when Yorkshire was beneath the see and much more in our fantastic galleries in the hear of the city.

We were disappointed in this museum. It is very well laid out for children with lots of interactive exhibits but for adults rather tedious. It didn't seem to have anything special
A combined ticket can be bought with the York Castle Museum which I would recommend.
Both are free to Art Fund ticket holders

Complete disappointment. probably very good if you are a professional archaeologist and go into a sweat at seeing a bit of ancient rubble, but sorry, not for me. I would happily scoop the lot up into the front bucket of a JCB and crush it into garden chippings! Sorry, but here you are.

So.... considering the rich history of York & Yorkshire we expected more content and exhibits than the museum provided.
A bit lacking to say the least and at £7.50p each to gain entrance not good value, compared to say, Bristol museum, which has free entrance & much more to see.
A bit disappointed & feel it is more geared towards unsuspecting tourists rather than telling the story of Yorkshire.

As we live locally we are able to take advantage of the last-all-year ticket which makes it good value - not too sure if you would think so as a one-off payment for 1 visit - maybe this is not for you. My children (5 & 3) love it and will always ask when we reach York if they are going here. It has improved dramatically since the re-vamp and as such there are many great hands-on things for little ones from dressing up as a Roman, dinosaur quizzes, a small puppet booth and many more. There are also 2 science acitivty rooms upstairs with floor jigsaws and numerous coluring acitivies. And also a small children's library with chairs and bean bags - so you can easily spend an hour in here (as my little ones often do!) All the displays are well laid out and easy to read so you can learn while the children are playing.
The history of York video is short and gives a very limited telling of the York story - still worth a look if you are new to our city.

You cannot take pushchairs around so these are left right in the main entrance lobby - this could get crowded on busy days. And it is best to leave bulky bags here as well.

There is a very, very small eating area in the shop which is okay for a quick rest - best place to eat is a picnic in the museum grounds.

Set in museum Gardens, this museum is very interesting and informative of Ancient York. Very good value for money especially if you buy a double ticket for £10 which also allows you admission to York Castle Museum, you can also re-use your ticket if you return within the next 12 months. This museum doesn't flow as well as the castle museum because there is no defined route around the building so you end up keep doubling back on yourself, but its not really an issue, its still a great place to visit!
