“Great Tapas”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

Just spent a wonderful evening in Cabra Verde. The wines, tapas, setting, ambiance and welcome were all first class. I particularly enjoyed the Pig's Cheek and the Sardines. Can't wait to return.

“Don't believe the hype”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

We went for dinner tonight on the back of the great reviews, but we were VERY disappointed. The portions were small and we left hungry. The food was mediocre at best, definitely not the best tapas outside Spain as some reviews suggest. Very expensive for what we had ... came home and had to have toast! Would not return.

Historically, we have not responded to trip advisor reviews, however on this occasion we were so taken aback by the injustice of this review we felt it needed a robust repost.

When the booking was made by e-mail, reference was made to the fact that one of the party was from the local press we are not sure why that was mentioned.

You have titled the review “Don't believe the hype” which I think the Oxford dictionary defines as “extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion” “a deception carried out for the sake of publicity”. Let me assure you we have done neither and find the suggestive nature of the title for this review absolutely outrageous and offensive

You state in your review that ”We went for dinner tonight on the back of the great reviews, but we were VERY disappointed”. I Noticed the use of the capitalisation of the word “VERY” however you didn’t at any point during your three and a half our visit to our restaurant mention that you were unhappy with the food.

You then go on to say “The portions were small and we left hungry. The food was mediocre at best, definitely not the best tapas outside Spain as some reviews suggest.” I have listed below the food that you ordered with the respective prices and a description of what each item actually consists of:

Croquetas £4.75
(Three hand crumbed croquettes filled with roast chicken and jamon Iberico)
Albondigas £4.95
(Five pork meatballs seasoned with basil and garlic served with a rich tomato sauce)
Pigs Cheek £5.75
(Pig’s cheek slowly braised for around 3 hours in a tomato, leek and red wine sauce)
Octopus £5.50
(Slow cooked in olive oil, garlic, fresh chilli, tomato and red wine)
Calamari £4.95
(Andalusian style squid rings grilled apple and Spanish black pudding-Morcilla de Burgos)
Sardines £4.95
(Pan fried filleted sardines marinated in lemon, bay leaves, garlic and paprika)
Fish Fritters £4.50
(Fish fritters served with lemon alioli)
Patatas al romero £3.75
(Crushed olive oil roasted new potatoes with rosemary)
Pan Fresco £3.50
(Sourdough from the Haxby Bakery served with olive oil and PX balsamic vinegar)

As you can see all but 2 items are under £5. These are the Pigs Cheek and Octopus which take about 4 hours in terms of preparation and cooking, hence the price. The rest of the items represent a fair price given the cost of ingredients and their preparation time and all compare very well with other restaurants serving Spanish cuisine both locally and in other provincial areas of the UK.

Whilst we can not, would not and never have claimed to offer the best tapas outside Spain, I would challenge your opinion that our food is mediocre at best. You do not get into the Good Food Guide, 3 years in a row with mediocre food and although we don’t push for reviews for trip advisor we have had enough very good and excellent reviews to suggest our customers don’t think it’s mediocre this along with favourable press coverage.

You then close by stating “Very expensive for what we had ... came home and had to have toast! Would not return.”

So in terms of food you spent £51.60 which included two desserts at £4.50 each so therefore you spent £42.60 between three people equating to £14.20 each for pan fresco and eight tapas dishes which are all prepared and cooked by our chefs on site.

Clearly you were disappointed with the food but I would re-iterate what I have said previously in this response that at no point during the evening did you convey your disappointment to any of the team and to this end have left us feeling bewildered about how you could leave such an negative review. Indeed the only review we have ever felt it necessary to responded to.

“Keep getting better and better”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough!
We headed down Peter Lane and, as ever, were made most welcome by all of the staff. The restaurant has a lovely ambience and means that you can relax and enjoy the cusiine and boy do they know how to make tapas!!
All of the dishes were lovely and the pigs cheek was my own personal highlight, although the prawns cooked in garlic butter ran it a close second.
If you haven't visietd Cabra Verde before, make a point of paying them a visit as you won't be disappointed. If, like us, you are a regular, then I'm sure you'll agree that it's the best tapas outside of Spain, with wonderful service in equal measure!

“SENSATIONAL FOOD”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

A gem of a restaurant, serving wonderful and expertly cooked Tapas. The marinated anchovies were superb (and I don't like anchovies!), the Spanish scrambled egg and black pudding creamy and so tasty. Try the calamari with apple and black pudding served on a wooden platter (my mouth is watering just writing this review). Finally, the slow cooked pigs cheek was delicious beyond words. Our desert was the Spanish equivalent of a warm crème brulee - divine! All this was freshly prepared and expertly cooked by Celia Mendao, the chef, who originates from Portugal. The front of house staff were efficient, polite and friendly. The restaurant is in this year's Good Food Guide and it is incredible value for money.

“What a find”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

This food was brilliant and the chef Celia a real talent, well done. Celia marinates her own anchovies and they are the best I have ever tasted. Pigs cheek was sensational and also the black pudding and scrambled egg fab. I will be coming again there is no doubt. They very much deserve making the 2014 good food guide.
