Owner description: Clifford's Tower is all that remains of York Castle. It's set upon a mound which was originally built by William the Conqueror. There is plenty of history to discover. We offer amazing 360 degree views from the top of the Tower over the City of York. Clifford's Tower is open 7 days a week, times vary throughout the year so it's advisable to check the website for details before you visit. There is an entry fee to visit the Tower.

IMO, there are three must-sees in York: The Minster, the walls, and Clifford's Tower. Something of a climb to get there, so the elderly might have a problem. But the tower is exceptionally well-preserved and very accessible once you climb the mound. View are unparalleled in York -- take your camera. Interesting exhibits in size. Very manageable, small attraction. Good for families. Charming little gift shop (with tasteless gifts) and very helpful staff.

I can't really 'rate' a tower with an incredibly long and fascinating history so I'll skip that, and instead mention what it's currently like to visit.

Clifford's Tower is a stunning landmark in York, up on a grassy hill (it kind of looks a bit like it's in a carpark from certain sides, but most pictures you'd take would be looking sky-wards anyway!). To get to the entrance you climb up a decent amount of steep steps. The price is a bit steep, if you're not taking advantage of a deal or EH membership and would add up quickly for a group.

Inside there's a little shop, a few information boards, and spiral staircases up to the top of the tower. From there the views are great, and there are more info boards pointing out notable buildings across the city.

All in all, it took me and a friend about 20/30 mins to finish the whole place. It was interesting, but I won't be going again too soon because of the entrance fee. It's not huge inside but I would have been really interested to read more about the history while there instead of looking it up later!

The steep steps up to Clifford's Tower are a little daunting but on this my third trip there I found it easier than before. On a clear day you can see for miles. Wonderful views all round and there are info boards on the tower top walkway to advise what is in the direction you are facing at that point. Very handy and cause lots of discussion. I like how the steps and walkway are one way only. Don't be put off by the climb and enjoy. I will return as I do like the Raspberry Curd in the shop :o)

Family ticket cost a tenner, nothing more to see after 20 mins, a bit boring and not value for money, I wouldn't bother
