We couldn't believe that this was free entry. You can donate £3 each for the booklet, which we did and we had a great afternoon. It was slightly more enjoyable for my husband as he's into engines but I enjoyed learning about how royalty and people travelled.
Well worth a trip.

Doesn't get cheaper than free! .. and a huge collection of big trains. Yes, I had to go on the miniature train too.

Probably the best laid out museum I have been to and it's free! Don't miss the chance to have a snack on the platform in a booth, surrounded by historic Royal carriages.

Firstly shocked the car park cost £9. We had left our B&B where we could have left our car but didn't. We only had 2 hours so it seemed high. If we had been staying a whole day then fine but there should be options. Enjoyed what we saw. The Landscape Photography exhibition is just marvelous and the royal trains. The Mallard wasn't available :( Chronological order might be good or at least a chronological guide. Otherwise plenty to see. Shildon's Rail Museum is great too!
