What a gem.
Great museum suitable for all ages. The faces of old and young as they stood next to, on and above the exhibits was enlightening.
Great displays, fantastically knowledgeable staff and walking distance from the city and it's mainline station.
I had the honour of taking our friends young children (a boy and a girl) and they were enthralled.
Great little souvenir shop on you way out.
A must see if you visit York.

So many trains and memorabilia to look at. Very interesting for all ages - even young children. As it was December there was a special steam train with Santa for the little ones. You could spend a whole day here and still not see everything. A definite must for the train enthusiast and even if you're not!

My partner and i travelled to york from the south coast to see relatives but spent the whole of a saturday seeing the sites. We visited the national railway museum---incidentally right next door to the mainline station. and wow, was it worth it??? you bet. travel back in time to the bygone days of the steam engine and the museum holds a fantastic collection of many different locomotives , carriages and rolling stock. even the royal coaches used by Queen Victoria. the interesting thing is you dont have to pay to go in but there are donation boxes on exit and we gave generously. one of the halls is stacked full of steam memorabilia. rows and rows of items from trains and stations that you just dont see anymore. even the restaurant/cafe in the main hall sold relatively cheap but high quality meals.
sadly didnt have a lot of time but could have spent several happy hours there.

This attraction has to be the best presented and value in york seeing that it is free to enter but donations are accepted min £3.00. All the history of the railway from the steam era up to the modern day with fantastic engines and artifacts all around you.
