Lots to see and amazing value considering it's free. Although the front desk people try and get a 'donation' out of you.
If you need a left luggage office, it's far cheaper at the museum than at the station

We were recently in york and went to the National Railway Museum. it was awesome and huge. It went on forever. Sometimes you go to museum's and you are done in an hour. Not this one. You could spend all day here. Lots of trains and railcars. Get there early, before it's crowded. Also, checkout, upstairs the library, it's fascinating. Highly, highly recommend it. They also have food and drinks.

What can I say, you have over 300 years worth of history all neatly packed into a museum that you can toddle around in a couple of hours. You have famous trains like the Mallard and they are currently repairing the Flying Scotsman as well as some novelty personal ones you can admire up close. There are plenty of informative boards and slideshows available so you can learn more in depth about each period of rail history.
To top it all off, it's free entry all week, but I would definitely give a donation to keep the place running. Kids and Adults alike would enjoy a day visit here if in York

Excellent Museum...vibrant, interesting, stimulating displays....enthusiastic staff....I visited specially for the view of world steam speed record holder 'Merlin' and her 5 'sisters'......a unique experience not to be missed....but at the height of the Summer tourist season, queues are inevitable, and this occasion was no exception......but with a little patience, courteous staff control the flow of numbers.....no need for panic......at any time, allow at least half a day to do justice to superb locomotives and roling stock......you do not need to be a railway 'buff' to enjoy.....hands-on experiences for children......free entrance is a real boost in this day & age.....meal & drink prices can appear expensive, but the free entrance balances this out... high quality of food.... go for lunch early or late to avoid congestion..........great gift shop of souvenirs for children.......only a 10-15 minute walk from York City Centre.......highly recommended displays of our national and technological heritage.......
