I'm not at all into trains, but because it was the no.1 York attraction, we just had to visit. We loved it, just for the nosey into the royal carriages! As one of the only free things to do in York, well worth a visit, even a quick one like ours!

Brilliantly set out with loads of information, interactive stuff and very helpful staff. Small donation of £3 to enter and you get a nice brochure

“Interesting for Engineers and others!”

First of all, it is amazing that this museum is FREE! What a steal! The National Railway Museum is a very interesting place to visit. I worried that since I didn't know much about the 'science' of the railway, I wouldn't appreciate it as much. Totally untrue. The exhibits are very clearly explained and labeled and there is a lot of 'social history' detailed, for the history buff. Try to get a warehouse tour with Lauren. She was wonderful as an 'explainer' (this is what they call the guides) and she showed our group 6 or 7 very interesting pieces of memorabilia that aren't usually highlighted.
One word of caution, if you don't like little children running everywhere, you may want to go very early or very late (just before closing.) I went around lunch time and every toddler in the area was running wild in the main hall. One child went up to the top of the footbridge and just yelled Mummy! Mummy! Mummy at the top of his lungs until his mother waved. Certainly did not detract from my visit at all, but it is an unusual atmosphere for a museum.

“York Railway Museum”

The entry fee was donation only and we gave a sensible sum. The whole experience was fabulous and although I am not a train fanatic, the layout and contents were first class. This museum must not be allowed to close!!!

If kids have never seen a steam train then this is the place to take them ! A must visit for anyone in the York area - I would never get bored walking around the place.
