“Largest Train Museum”
Reviewed November 26, 2011

The amazing part is that most of these are in working order, not just a pretty shell in a museum. Facinating the past few years watching the Flying Scotsman being refurbished.
Food was very good in the museum as well, great shop.

“A Must Visit when in York”
Reviewed November 26, 2011

A great national museum which is especially rewarding for nostalgia buffs as well as railway enthusiasts. Our second visit to this exhibition was as good as the first one several years back. The exhibits are excellently presented although the bright sunlight into the Great Hall did prevent us from taking good snaps of some of these trains. The Museum staff interacted well and additional ‘tours and talks’ were available free of charge, such as a chat on the Japanese Bullet train and a guided tour through the Warehouse where thousands of interesting artefacts are stored and displayed. The Station Hall has a great collection of Royal carriages displayed with the luxurious fittings that ensured a mode of travel no longer seen on the different UK networks. The NRM is a highly recommended way to spend at least half a day during your visit to York.

“A place not to miss - and it is free!”
Reviewed November 26, 2011

I am a resident of York and often visit the National Railway Museum. The great thing about the museum is it is free and it appeals to yound and not so young. As well as the wonderful steam trains to see there is a great selection of memorabilia charting the history of railways back almost 200 years.
There are some lovely films on show at vaious places throughout the museum. Most of these films were made by British Transport Films - the film unit of BR. The films show a Britain of not so long ago but a long way from the technical digital world of today.
Any trip to York is incomplete without a visit to the National Railway Museum.

“My youngest son loves trains - what more could he want!!”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

Really excellent day out - I am not a huge train fan but really enjoyed it - my kids love trains and they are in heaven.

Had some good interactivity for younger ones at half term - could do with more interactive displays and a refresh on some of the existing displays. Fantastic collection of old engines though - some of the most important. A shame the Flying Scotsman has gone but the Mallard is an amazing machine.

Good selection of snacks and food as well.
